"Damn straight," Saul said, turning the chair around backwards before dropping into it. "Proud of you, Bill."
"Thanks." Bill was worrying at his lip. Saul had a feeling what he was about to say, but he fully planned to make him actually say it. "I'm the XO now," he repeated. "We can't go on like this."
"Why the frak not?"
"Because! There are regs."
"There've always been regs, Bill. You didn't care about them before."
Bill sighed and leaned back in his chair. The Colonel's pins on his collar caught Saul's eyes. He deserved them.
"Things are different now," Bill said slowly. "I'm more visible. I need to be seen as impartial. When I was CAG, we still shouldn't have been doing this, but I was soft. I was in love."
"I'm still in love."
Bill rubbed his chin. "I know. I am, too. We just have to hold off a few years."
"Until when, Bill? First I had to wait for you to get divorced, now I'm waiting for retirement? Frak this." Saul jumped to his feet, forking a hand through his hair. There was a bottle in his rack that was calling his name.
"Saul."
Saul didn't stop. His hand was on the hatch when he felt Bill's arms encircle him from behind.
"Stop, Saul. Let me finish. It's not about you. It's about me." He pulled Saul tight against his chest.
"Well, it sure feels like it's about me." Saul pulled against Bill's arms until he released him. "I don't see why we can't go on like we did."
Bill sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Because I can't do that. I can't be impartial. When I was CAG, it was hell to put you in danger. I don't know what I'll do when I'm XO. I love you too much."
Saul brushed his fingertips over Bill's cheek. "I don't need you to keep me safe, babe. I can take care of myself." He smiled. "Or do you not think that?"
"It's not that." Bill's face softened. "Couldn't bear it if anything happened to you, but I can't bear to be apart from you if you transferred somewhere else. I'm a mess, huh?"
"Yeah, but I love you anyway." Saul kissed him. For a moment, Bill seemed reticent, but Saul nudged him back from the hatch. They moved to the rack without discussion, making Saul wonder how long they would have been able to stay away from each other if he'd even agreed to give it all up.
He coaxed Bill to hardness, hoping he was doing a good job of reminding him what a dumb suggestion that had been.
"I think we make a better team like this," he murmured in Bill's ear once he was inside him. "You and me."
Bill screwed his eyes shut and took in a ragged breath. Saul took that for agreement and began moving slowly, watching every change in his XO's expression.
Now that was a hot thought. He was frakking the XO.
He couldn't wait until Bill got his own battlestar.
"Private quarters you know," he muttered later when they were tangled in the sheets. He rubbed Bill's chest. "Tell me that wasn't your first thought when he gave you the pins."
Bill ruffled Saul's hair. "You have a filthy mind."
"I'm serious. We can make this work." He kissed Bill.
Bill smiled fondly. "I guess we can try."
