I think the reason that the showrunners decided to both give her cancer and show it straight away were to try to make her even less of an ideal candidate for president. Not only is she untrained and untested, she's also dying and is under a huge amount of personal strain because of that. I think perhaps it was intended to make her weaker, but I think it actually had the opposite effect. She ended up believing from the outset whatever life it was that she was leading the fleet to was not for her, and so it was far easier for her to put her own needs and wants aside and concentrate on the fleet as a whole, which made her actually much stronger.
What surprised you about Laura's background as it was depicted in canon? What feels like it's missing from her background/ pre-Cylon return life as we see it in the show?
I think all of those are MY head!canon too, in particular about her parents and her father's second marriage (which are almost VERBATIM how I would have put it). Interesting!
If Laura stayed in remission, they'd have to reconcile the Pythia arc somehow. Perhaps another priest/priestess/oracle/theological scholar would come forward with an additional prophesy. Maybe something having to do with Hera being the shape of things to come. I see Laura as an almost maternity goddess, so I'm interested in her link to Hera

Everyone knows the Greek myth connections, so leaving those aside, I see Kara as very much a Joan of Arc-type character, and this is probably why I'm actually at peace with her death. She's this person who has a profound faith in the gods, despite many personal difficulties. Young, impulsive, from a poor background, she comes into an unexpected role of leadership. A woman doing a man's job (and doing it better than a man could.) She is able to lead people unexpectedly effectively in a war until she's (literally) caught by the other side. As a result of that, she dies (by her own hand, in canon), but it's her memory that continues to provide the guidance for those who come afterward. Her memory is revered from that point onward

What do you think this means? Is it to do with reincarnation or life cycles or simply a way of saying the people don't learn from history?
