A Poor Substitute (Cottle, Caprica - T)afrakadayMarch 13 2012, 17:11:38 UTC
Cottle checks his wristwatch as he makes his rounds; the Six (Caprica, he reminds himself) should be coming out of her anesthesia soon.
He knows Saul isn’t with her. After performing the extraction, he’d confirmed to Saul that it had indeed been a boy, and with a haunted look in his eye and nary a word, Saul had fled Life Station, no doubt in search of a bottle.
With a sigh, he pokes his head into the curtained area where she’s recovering. She stirs and mumbles incoherently. Her eyes crack open slightly, squinting uncharacteristically. “Saul?”
Cottle walks over to her, reaches for her hand and pats it awkwardly. “Hey, there,” he offers in the soothingest tone he can muster. “You’re in Life Station. It’s all right.”
Confused eyes well with tears as she realizes where she is, and why. “Saul?” she whimpers. It’s a question and a plea.
The doctor just shakes his head. It’s hard to be anything but empathetic to a woman in her position. It’s hard to think of her as anything but a woman in this position.
“The good news is, the procedure went well,” he offers, knowing it won’t heal the hurt she’s feeling. “You could..try again.”
Her entire body tenses, and he has to look away. They both know that whatever conditions allowed for this anomalous “pure Cylon” pregnancy in the first place have disappeared with Ellen Tigh’s return.
So he settles for giving her another mild sedative and hopes that by the next time she wakes up, he’ll have found Saul and dragged his ass back to sickbay to dry out and offer Caprica some comfort. He’d been prepared to raise a child with her; the XO needs to do right by Caprica, even if for the last time.
