The first time it happens, they’re both stunned to silence. Kara was screaming about wanting her father to come home, and suddenly the sound of a slap is echoing in their dingy apartment and her cheek is red and stinging. Socrata stares down in horror, then drops to her knees, wrapping Kara in her arms. “I’m sorry,” she whispers frantically, holding on tightly. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Kara stands stiffly, her heart still racing, tears in her eyes. After a moment, she tentatively hugs her mother back. She wants to make this last as long as she can.
She finds Gaeta in the gym and stands awkwardly nearby, arms folded across her chest. He turns and sees her and visibly jerks. “What do you want?” he asks warily, stepping further away. Kara sighs. She knows exactly how he feels. “I’m sorry,” she mutters. Gaeta snorts, then nods. “Fine.” “I just can’t get my head out of there,” she whispers. He looks up at her, and his face softens. “Don’t worry about it. Really.” For a second they just stare at each other uncomfortably, then Gaeta’s eyes drop. “Me neither.” Kara sighs, a hint of a sob catching in her throat. “I could use a drink.” Gaeta tosses his gloves to the mat. “Lead the way.”
When ever I watch Exodus II, I can't help but draw comparisons between the lost look Kara has after Julia takes Kasey and the lost look Felix has coming out of the Raptor. They're both so wounded coming off New Caprica and this captures them perfectly.
