So I am now in New Orleans. I traveled through Dallas and Natchitoches over the weekend to get here. This is after the dialtone in my house in Rolla went out and I had to wait 4 hours for a technician to come out to fix it. Ugg...
Dallas was fun. I got to visit with Brien and his parents. For some reason Brien's parents( Rex and Cherol - that's prolly wrong) decided to grill me about colleges. This was, of course, all done in front of Brien so that his mom could pressure Brien into looking at smaller colleges. Brien seems to fancy UT-A.. too big for me, but it might work for him. While not being grilled, Brien and I went to the mall, picked up a Dallas shot glass (for Adam's collection) and went to see Mr. and Mrs. Smith (that was a good movie.. different than wha tI expected, but still good). On our way out of the mall, Brien "picked up" a magnet - those ribbon things everyone has on the back of their cars. *Shrug* I didn't see /remember what car he got it from though.
After my two nights at Brien's and a sad goodbye (I hate goodbyes), I drove on to Natchitoches to visit the kids at ADVANCE. Boy, were they ecstatic to see me. I can't even count the number of kids who jumped on me when they saw me. Even Steven Green ran up to me and gave me a huge hug, and he hates being hugged. So I spent the rest of yesterday hanging out with the students and staff at ADVANCE... I scared some of the students because I knew their names (and what course they were in last year and some distinguishing things about them).
That's probably why I'm so popular, I make a huge attempt to get to know each of the kids there (or I don't know them). I talked to Paul a lot that night and he said he thought I was to famaliar with the students - too unprofessional is how I took it... but I don't see it that way. Paul's big on fairness and I don't think he handles having authority of friends very well, because he wants to remain so distant from everyone so he can remain "professional" BAH.
Anyway, today I picked up a shot glass from Natchitoches (for Adam) and went to play Ultimate Frisbee with the students. Only thing is that Harriette and Dr. Wood wouldn't let me because I wasn't on staff (insurance). I am going to apply to teach at ADVANCE next year, even with MAYA coming up. I can do both (though Harriette doesn't think so). She doesn't want me to apply, but I am.. she's going to have to decline to hire me if she really doesn't want me there.
God, my visit to ADVANCE made me realize how much I miss it. I always look forward to June for the program and seeing all the kids almost whine about me not being there makes me so sad :-(
So that's strike two for this trip - Adam declined to come with me and I miss ADVANCE. But I did get to see Brien(!!) and I'll be seeing Michael sometime this week (hopefully).
Yay for long entries.
