This time last night,
misphit and I were just getting back from taking our Basset Hound Beth to the emergency vet down the street, for lack of appetite, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea. While at the vet, Beth at one point went over to a corner, squatted, and let loose about a cup of blood with a minimum of fecal matter... which I got to clean up, because the nurse/tech talking to us had a dozen things to deal with. She was looking pretty bad, in large part probably due to dehydration since she couldn't keep even water down.
Either last night or today, I can't really remember, she was diagnosed with
Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, supported by her obvious symptoms and hematocrit level from a blood draw.
This morning, we picked her back up and after 6 hours with an IV for fluids and some antibiotics, she was looking pretty good... and then we dropped her off with our regular vet (also down the street: we're pretty lucky to have 24/7 vet care available within a half mile of our place). There she was in for further examination, IV hydration, more antibiotics, and test feedings to see when she could hold food down again.
This evening, I picked her up because she was keeping food down, acting perky, and no longer spewing shit and blood and vomit at every opportunity. She looked great, although the vet warned us she'd be pretty tired from all of the excitement and difficult sleeping conditions (basically being in one well-lit room or another for 18 hours straight, at the end of a rough day yesterday). Per the link above and what the vets told us, she should recover quickly and chances are good that it will never happen to her again.
Then a storm hit tonight, complete with quarter-to-golf-ball hail, tornadoes, you name it. People, dogs, and cat all spent half an hour chilling in the bathroom because apparently a tornado touched down about a mile north of us, something I don't think I've seen in Austin before.
Now, past midnight, I'm just chilling a bit. The dogs and cat are asleep,
misphit is asleep, and I'm just enjoying the feeling of the quiet after the storm(s).
