Well, Mary Anne wasn't catching the kids doing stuff. Mal was within her right as the triplets' sister to tell them off.

No it isn't. It actually glorified the role a mother has in her children's lives. At the time, being a mom was a given and not a big deal, but the book/play showed how important the love and care from a mother can be to a child.
