I'd never gotten this far in the series so, I had no idea what to expect from this book. You can imagine my horror to find out it's about child neglect. Again. Why does Ann always write such horrible parents?! I understand that the series focuses on the BSC so, the parents are really just stage dressing but she does this all the time. You could

would happen if the Pikes watched their own kids for a change
Of course she did. Mallory call CPS on your parents. Or maybe
just threaten them with it.
How come Mal had to have an unreasonable amount of responsibility pushed on her at a young age while all the other little apes get to have a childhood?
Good point. One year makes no difference. Mallory was doing the same amount
of work when she was ten. I still wonder what Mrs. Pike does all day long.
She has no job.
Jenny is seriously so cute I want to hit the BSC with a shovel.
So do I. I love Jenny.
And again, what's the big deal with a kid being neat and girly?
Good question. Not to mention isn't Mary Anne neat and girly?
And all ready my heart is breaking for this girl because it's obvious her parents are ignoring her for Andrea.
Poor Jenny.
They pass Claire and Margo playing beach in the dirt and Jenny says they're like pigs. Which is rude, but she's four. We're supposed to see all this as Jenny being unbearable, but it's really just sad.
Is it wrong to think Jenny's right? I've kind of always thought the Pikes kids
were pigs.
I would be more concerned at the levels she's taking it too rather than think she's a problem.
Me too. Leave it to the BSC to focus on the wrong thing.
I also really wonder at Ann for always writing such awful characters. And the victim blaming. My God, the victim blaming
I'd love to ask her about that. About how Mallory was treated in Hello Mallory, Claudia when she made a friend, Mary Anne when she cut her hair, and how could she possibly think Karen is an awesome kid?
Why is she a brat again? Can you imagine if someone had refused Karen? Or Claire? Karen has declared war on classmates for them refusing to obey her whims. And she makes her friends ostracize people she doesn't like. What the fuck is wrong with Ann?!
I'd love to know.
The Death of K Ron and Karen! Enjoy!
I'm always up for that!

Can you imagine if she told a guidance counselor about how her parents treat her? They would definitely be hearing from CPS.

I wonder too. I know in Poor Mallory she was temping but I don't know whether she still is. But even if she is, Vanessa and the triplets don't really need constant supervision. Actually, as long as you're in the house, the kids should be fine on their own. I spent a good part of my childhood in my playroom down the hall from my mom's room. She knew I'd be okay. Kids don't need someone in the room with them all the damned time.

I thought about that too. Mary Anne doesn't like to do anything that makes you break a sweat so why does she get a pass and Jenny doesn't?

Maybe not. When I was a kid, as the oldest cousin, I really had far too many chores for a while to "set a good example" for kids I only saw on weekends. I was responsible for everything from making coffee in the morning to my brother's laundry and making sure his room was clean, and even making sure his homework was done. He was two years younger, that's it.
I had an essay to do at school about our chores, and I went into it, and detailed what I was responsible for. The only thing I didn't do was make my parents' waterbed. I wrote about being frustrated that I didn't get an allowance at the time even though I felt like a slave because I'd get in trouble if I didn't so everything perfectly. My teacher thought it was funny, and my parents did too, at least until they said if I thought I was doing too any chores that I could also... I remember them both sitting there, trying to figure out a chore I wasn't already doing.
So, rather than CPS being called in, the teacher laughed and said it sounded like so much fun. So many chores legally falls under "parenting decisions" rather than child abuse or something.

The guidance counselor would be in shock at how much her parents make her do.

I do remember Mrs. Pike saying at the end of Poor Mallory she would still need to temp every once in awhile but I don't think it ever came up again. I agree about the kids. While the triplets could use some manners and discipline. For the most part the kids play with each other don't they? The triplets are always playing together, Margo and Claire are always playing together. Vanessa's happy alone writing poetry, the only odd one out is Nicky but who knows maybe he's happy to be alone and not being tormented by the triplets.
