Basically, Claudia is a celebrity in seventh grade because she’s one year older than the kids.

Back then, it wasn't rare to have a kid start kindergarten at the age of 6, or be held back a grade. Someone being a year older isn't a big deal.

Seventh graders are such dorks and not one of them are as cool as she is and they all know it. She’s actually saying this.

Did she forget that Mal and Jessi are younger than that?

Everyone is wearing what Claudia wears.

They couldn't do that when she was in 8th grade because...?

Claudia never has to eat lunch alone because people actually fight each other to sit at her table.

Since when was seating by grade at that school?

Claudia is also keeping up with her reading and remembering things after she takes a test.

This makes it sad when she's bumped back up. She's getting 7th grade stuff now, but while she's doing that, she's missing the stuff 8th graders are learning, which will start her off behind.

The eighth grade is holding a separate dance.

That would be extremely stupid.

you don’t have the same classes and lunch periods

Wait...different lunch periods? Either three periods for lunch, of the 6th graders are doubling up. This makes no sense.

tacey is going as a flapper. In a few years she’ll just wear lingerie and animal ears and call that George. Mallory is going as Emily Dickinson. Jessi is going a ballet dancer. Abby is going as a soccer player. Kristy is going as the big bad wolf and Mary as Red Riding Hood.

Uh...so the 6th graders can go to this 8th grade dance, but 7th graders can't?

I’ve heard about schools having different dances for the lower grades, but what’s the difference?

Usually that's high school where the upperclassmen have proms, but not in middle school.

The seventh grade boys are immature for flicking water and tossing apples at each other. I would have rolled my eyes at that, but is Claudia really trying to say eighth grade boys wouldn’t be doing stupid shit as well?

Alan Grey. Pete Black. Logan was kicked out of Peter Pan for worse.

There’s a note from Ann Martin about how Claudia was moved from the eighth to seventh grade and had a hard time fitting in. She suggests ways to make friends, such as trying out for activities you like or joining a sports team.

Why does going back a grade mean losing all your friends and having to make new ones to Ann?

Claudia probably secretly thinks Mal and Jessi are dorks. I think she and Stacey already think they're superior to Mary Anne and Kristy for liking boys earlier. And I think that the sixth and seventh grade have one dance and the eighth grade has a separate one. I'm not sure. And my middle school did have a prom for the eighth grade.
