I hope that I'd have noticed my kid was failing sooner and intervened sooner ( ... )

Repeating the grade you're in will be ordered at the end of the year. In the middle of the year, like this book would be, they'd send you back a grade instead of having you sit there the rest of the year.

Right it would be at the end of the year. During the school year parents, teachers, etc. would be warning the student say Claudia that if her grades don't improve she'd have to repeat the eighth grade. I guess that's the downside of having characters who all keep repeating the same grade it means nothing if Claudia's repeating the same grade with her entire class.

But I wondered if Claudia has ever considered that she'd be held back because of her grades and never turning in assignments? Most of us have guessed that after the series ends Claudia ends up repeating the eighth grade. Has that ever occurred to her? She blows off school work, homework assignments all of it. She doesn't think that could get her held back? Does she not know that could get her held back?

If it's mid-year, being sent back a year does happen. It's a better use of the student's time at school than to cajole them for half the year. Going back lets them reinforce what they learned in those last months to prepare for starting the year over. I've known more kids who were sent back grades id-year than kids who were told at the end of the year that they were going to have to repeat the year.

Claud says she doesn't fail tests much, which makes me think that she'd pass just fine (at least with D's) if she just did her homework. I'm pretty floored that her parents are letting her continue all her activities when she's not doing her homework. Mine would have put the kibosh on activities if I didn't have any good reason for getting C's.

Mine would have too. School was a priority. And if I was making the grades Claudia made. They would be all over me about homework and tests finding out why I was making bad grades was I simply not doing the work or was I struggling. Claudia makes bad grades, blows off her homework and admits to not doing assignments. Yet, nothing happens. She doesn't get in trouble. Her parents don't make her stop babysitting or taking art classes. Aren't they worried that Claudia will have to repeat the eighth grade? About how her getting into college? About her future? They did at one point sit with her every night to make sure she did her homework. Why did they stop that?
