I also had the image of Janine trying to bond with Claudia by telling her about articles about chocolate she read because she thinks talking about that might interest Claudia. --And the sad thing is Janine's gonna be shut down even if she goes to Claudia about a topic that interests CLAUDIA!
prompting Claudia to say that they don’t waste any time. --Yeah, they kinda have. I realize the girls are back at the start of another 8th grade year. What was going through their minds all the other times in previous grades?
I hope that I'd have noticed my kid was failing sooner and intervened sooner.--This.
I like to imagine Janine having supportive friends.--Same.
She also tells Claudia that she’s smart enough to skate along for a little bit, but one day that method isn’t going to work.--I just disagree with that. She's already fallen flat on her ass if we're sticking with the skating along for a little bit example.
Claudia says she doesn’t usually fail tests and I just did a double take.--How the fuck is that possible? I admit my thoughts about Claudia's work were "Don't give a fuck about doing my homework, don't care to pay attention in class, gonna bomb my tests."
Rosa is a really good tutor. --Did Rosa make anymore appearances in the series? You'd think when Claudia moved back to 8th grade and started messing up again, she'd be brought back to be Claudia's tutor again.
What kind of school is SMS?--One that cares more about having dances instead of focusing on the educational front. :D
They actually tell Claudia they’ll lighten her babysitting load so she’ll have more time to focus on her studies.--It's a shame we didn't have this type of behavior in the books more often. This is the way good friends should treat each other. I guess I'm just used to Kristy giving a LOOK and ranting and raving about the cult should be everybody's #1 priority. You won't be taking time away from the cult or babysitting in order to pass your classes.
Of course, I can get pissed off at the dumbest shit imaginable.--After I typed up what I said above, I got to thinking about the other side of the coin. I want to believe that the girls are being supportive because Claudia's their friend. That's it, end of story. But the nice behavior seems out of character. I wonder if the nice behavior is covering up a panic setting in? 'If Claudia doesn't do better in school, her parents might force her to drop the club. And then we'd have to find a new headquarters. Better be supportive and try to help her with anything she needs help with."
Claudia also goes to the resource room and complains that the aide actually expects her to put in some effort to keep up with her schoolwork.--WTF? What did Claudia expect would happen at the resource room? "I thought we could hold a small dance in here! Party time!"
If Claudia is having such trouble with school and her parents place such an emphasis on education, why haven’t they been monitoring Claudia’s schoolwork more closely? --That's what I don't understand. The Kishi parents aren't written as being deadbeats that don't give a shit about Claudia or Janine! It's not like they're saying "Susie, come over here." "Susie's not my name, it's Claudia." I don't understand the missing homework assignments. I've been reading a lot of old snarks lately--did Claudia blow off turning in homework in 7th grade during the early part of the series. How does that work? Is Claudia bullshitting her parents? "I've already done all my homework!" How has the school not contacted about all the missing homework before? I would think by at least a week of not turning in homework, there'd be contact with parents about the kid not turning in their work.
But Mrs. Kishi said they didn’t realize how badly Claudia was doing in the last chapter.--I just don't see how that's possible during ANY of the storylines Claudia's doing badly in school--whether it was 7th grade the first time around or even this time around in 8th grade. Hasn't she been in school long enough to get a progress report? Is Claudia forging her parents signatures? Oh man, I don't even want to think about that. Claudia could probably nail their writing style down, question I have is if she'd misspell her own parents names?
So why is this book called Claudia Kishi, Middle School Dropout?--Do you think it could be a slight nod to "Grease"? I admit it's been many years since I've watched Grease. It used to be one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I just watched it so many times I got sick of it. Anyway, isn't that a storyline with Frenchie--Beauty School Dropout?
Claudia talks shit about how babyish her classmates look.--What a load of shit. Claudia, it's not like you got dropped down to 2nd grade!
Claudia has a hard time adjusting, but when she does her homework, she finds out she actually understands it. --And I head desk at her moving back to 8th grade after a few books.
They have a surprise party for Jackie and still talk shit about him being the Walking Disaster.--These girls are so fucking two faced.
Now that I think about it, spilling punch and knocking things over seems to be normal behavior.--Can't tell me these girls haven't done the same shit throughout their life. Or do they always assume it's a bad luck curse if they spill something or bust their ass?
I mean, who hasn’t spilled something or tripped?--Exactly.

I don't understand the Kishis either. They are suppose to be strict or at least very concern about school and grades. But then do nothing to help Claudia? Claudia got in trouble in the beginning of the series for blowing of her school which, that's when she had to start doing her homework with a family member. Then what? That just stopped? My parents were far from strict but if their kid was struggling in school they'd have done everything they could to help. Whether it was helping with the homework, finding a tutor, etc. Except for the early series helping Claudia with her homework every day, they don't do anything.
How has the school not contacted about all the missing homework before? I would think by at least a week of not turning in homework, there'd be contact with parents about the kid not turning in their work.
Good question. Why wasn't the school contacting the Kishis about Claudia not turning in her homework and/or doing badly on her tests. Did she ever have to get her parents to sign her test or homework? Or do they not do that anymore?

Enjoyed the snark! :)
