People I know who don't want to raise kids still love kids, but they love being able to give the kids back at the end of the day. Being with a kid for a few hours is easier than raising one day in, day out, for years and years and years.

If I were a parent with a kid in a typical school, I'd be calling and complaining loudly about kids being forced to maintain relationships without regard for their individual desires outside the classrooms, or any real life relationships they already have.

When you're a parent who gives a damn, part of your brain is hyper alert, even at night when you try to sleep. It's a biological thing. Women, especially, are wired to wake up pretty quickly to take care of the baby. My daughter is 5, still sleeps with me (sometimes on top of me, like she's trying to make a mommy-daughter Monster High fusion person), and even when she's not, I'm aware of my brain being partly awake to listen for her.

-I'm not a mom; but when I used to babysit overnight for my nieces; I rarely slept. Neither did they, my youngest niece would wake up and cry until I held her, and once I calmed her down, the older one would wake up having a meltdown and that was it. It was rare they actually slept well and even if they did; I couldn't. I was too worried about something happening and me not hearing them because I was too asleep. Moving here, it took forever to sleep on a good schedule and even still; sometimes I have trouble sleeping!
