Supposedly the chain was already broken, and Betsy knew it, but how does that happen? I've NEVER heard of that kind of chain randomly breaking. It's HARD to cut through it. You actually have to either use compression bolt-cutters, or a welder to melt the steel enough.

I get that the Kishis are culturally Japanese, and that includes the heavy emphasis on grades, but for fuck's sake, the academic pressure has led to Japan having the 9th highest suicide rate in the world (and it's actually FALLEN in place since this book came out), and is the top cause of death for young men, and right up near the top for young women. I get that they want their daughter to succeed in life, but they need to realize she needs an evaluation. I'm sure Ann didn't intend this, but Claud has the markers for dyslexia. Sure, there are times she's just plains stupid, but she still likely has dyslexia, which will make studying harder for her.
I was that kid who did so well on math that if I got a B on a test, my parents wanted to know why. I wasn't in trouble, but they knew math usually came so easily to me that, if I got a B, it meant I was struggling somehow. D's and F's were NOT acceptable, but a B, and even occasional C, weren't the end of the world. Just let's find where I'm having trouble, and work on that. It wasn't high pressure.
