He has to be. He's supporting his household as well as Maureen and Stacey. Maureen came out of the divorce with enough money to buy a house despite not having a job at the time, meaning she paid in cash. Cash her ex earned. And now he's paying alimony (at that time, alimony was a certainty), and child support, which can easily be a third of his pre-tax income. In fact, at that time, it was common for the custodial parent (Maureen, CP) to get more money from the non-CP than the non-CP got since the NCP has to pay taxes on all of it, but the CP not only doesn't have taxes, but also get the write-off for the child.
For as well as it looks like he's living, Maureen's very likely got more. Before anyone bitches about him working a lot, they need to think about the cuts everyone would have to make if he took fewer hours, and that's only IF the judge would even let the support and alimony go down if he worked less. Usually the answer is NO.
I agree its amazing how much Maureen and Stacey bitch about him being a workaholic. Given how much those to spend he has to be! If he was around more and not working they'd both bitch immediately over the drop in their funds to blow. Maureen pisses me off more then Stacey because for all her complaining it never occurred to the princess to get a JOB. She mentioned once that she didn't work because Stacey's diabetes. Well, what was the excuse the decade or so before? She certainly waited a good long while after her divorce to get one. I remember Stacey being so surprised her mom had to get a job then. She seemed to think her dad should continue to support her unemployed butt until she dropped dead. Sorry to go off but Maureen pisses me off. And because she's conviently the only parent around to fill Stacey's head about her father.

I'm still glad this stuff made it into the books. I look at all the other things the writers messed up on so I kind of want to lean into the direction of it being an accident it got into the books. Anyway, I think this was one thing a lot of the readers could relate to of having one parent or both parents badmouthing each other to the kids, a marriage that ended so badly that it's like pulling teeth trying to get them into the same room or talk to each other after the marriage busts up for good, etc.
