“If your spot is so off that anyone can tell, you’re not getting a call-back. Especially since Jessi grabbed the page of his notes and... ‘It was filled with lots more notes that were just as technical.’ If you have AN ENTIRE PAGE of notes about what you did wrong, YOU ARE NOT GETTING THROUGH. ‘I recognized a lot of the mistakes they had caught. They were things I often did wrong. Well, now I had the whole week to work on them.’ If you regularly make THAT MANY MISTAKES (etc.) . . . ” - I’m so glad someone with actual ballet knowledge is snarking this; I don’t know anything about ballet, and sadly, as a kid it seemed perfectly plausible that Derek, a kid with an untrained eye, could spot Jessi’s errors, I guess because I’d read so many of the BSC books with kids solving crimes and whatever. For the same reason, Jessi’s ballet success despite her mistakes didn’t seem suspect at all. I have to wonder if the ballet school she goes to just doesn’t want to start a ‘racism’ thing by not giving her whatever she wants . . .
Okay, so Derek didn’t really notice Jessi’s mistakes, he just had the sense to write down what the actual critics were noticing. Still (and here’s where my total lack of ballet knowledge may slap me publicly), if Jessi’s spot is so off that a whole group of people can tell, she probably IS really bad at what she’s doing.
