First, welcome to bsc_snark! :)

Do you mind putting this behind a cut, though? It's a bit long otherwise. Sorry.

As for the "special" thing, don't get me started. It bothers me that people think they're being progressive when they use that term!

I'm surprised this book didn't bother me more, considering I'm hard of hearing myself (if not deaf, unless you count having bad hearing at all as deaf? I don't know). But then, I also remember not really liking it that much, either, so maybe it did bug me a bit. It's definitely very ignorant though, especially the way ASL is dealt with, and how Matt doesn't seem to have any personality traits other than... being deaf.

What really bugs me is that if you read the third BSC book, the whole point is that it's about a girl (Stacey) who wants people to accept that being different doesn't make her a freak show or a pityfest, that she's still entitled to dignity, respect and privacy. So I honestly wonder if that was actually AMM remembering teaching special needs students*, and over the years she forgot, or this book was written by one of her ghosties and she didn't bother to make sure they got it right.

*I know diabetes doesn't mean you're in special ed, but then, neither does being deaf. :) My point is, AMM seemed to have taken away an understanding of what it's like, only to have forgotten about that later in her writing career.

I am super sorry about the cut! When it comes to computers I'm Claudia taking a spelling test. (ETA- I went back and fixed the cut and some other stuff and I'm so proud of myself, I'd give me a gold star)

As for the "deaf" qualification- my dad and I get into arguments about what it means. Dad staunchly calls me "hearing impaired", but I'm legally deaf, so I go by that term. There's different laws about deaf status that are measured by decibel, so that's what I go by.
