Jessi and the Bad Babysitter

Sep 19, 2011 09:50

I forgot how much I loved this book and as I haven't done a snark for a while, I figured now is as good a time as any! Aren't you all lucky?

Chapter 1
Jessi is babysitting for Becca and Squirt. She's playing monopoly with Becca but Squirt is being a pain. I hate Squirt. Jessi has also come to love Aunt Cecelia. Makes a change. Anyway, Jessi can't keep an eye on both kids properly and so she tells Becca to move the monopoly set to the living room so she can keep an eye on both. Surely it would have made more sense to do that to begin with? Squirt puts a monopoly piece in his mouth. Jessi distracts him to make him open his mouth so she can fish it out and Wendy comes over.

Jessi crushes on Wendy. She has a really pretty face.

Anyway, Wendy watches the kids and Flipper whilst Jessi makes hot chocolate. Aunt Cecelia comes home and everyone is happy. Boring chapter.

Chapter 2
This chapter annoys me. It starts right off with Little Miss Dictator refusing to take a call from Mrs Wilder for phoning 5 minutes too early. She says she will ring her back when the meeting starts. She's going to have to call her back with a sitter anyway so why not just take the damn information there and then and save calling back twice and the price of a call? I hate Kristy. Oh and THEN she starts complaining that not everyone is there by 5.27pm.

Jessi admires Kristy, thinks Claudia is gorgeous, Stacey is very pretty with the biggest blue eyes, Mary Anne is gentle, Dawn is tall and Mallory has braces.

Jessi has many crushes.

Meanwhile, Mallory has fallen asleep; presumably this is a subtle dig by the ghostwriters at the boringness of the Chapter 2!

Chapter 3
Oh noez! The BSC are in trouble! The phone keeps ringing and they are struggling to schedule jobs. The parents of the 'Brook completely SUCK in this chapter. Mr Hill keeps ringing back demanding to know who is sitter is and then cancels because he needs to know immediately and can't wait. This is extremely unreasonable and unrealistic; the girls would have phoned back within the half hour time slot. Unless he needed a sitter for 10 minutes time, there is no reason he couldn't wait as it would take anyone that long at least to come back. Obnoxious. Mallory phones in with exhaustion and Kristy freaks out, declaring it a disaster. Everyone hates Mallory. No one cares about her sickness.

Claudia sensibly points out that if no one can sit, no one can sit and it happens but Kristy declares it the end of the world. There is a crash of thunder and an asteroid prepares itself to head towards planet Earth.

Then Mrs Kuhn starts being impatient and also phones wanting to know who her sitter is.

Finally, Kristy agrees to replace Dawn. Jessi mentions Wendy and Kristy tells her to bring her to the next meeting.

Right at the end of the meeting, the phone calls and it's...Dawn! Is it just me or does Dawn either visit or ring in every book she's not in? It's like she's making her presence felt. Kristy is a bitch and tells Dawn she has to come back. Sad thing is, she probably means it and it's not an affectionate joke!

Chapter 4
Jessi and Mal notebook entry. Mal complains that she feels ill and Jessi snarks that she doesn't know why she's complaining when SHE did all the work. Ouch. Yes, they are babysitting at the Pikes. The kids are being rowdy and poor Mal doesn't have the energy to be the normal authority figure she is. Jessi snidely remarks about all the work she is having to do. Poor Mal. Meanwhile, Vanessa has curled her hair. One side is nice and curly, other side has rollers stuck in it. Jessi cuts them out. Uh, what? I'm sure Mama Pike loved you butchering her daughter's hair. Why not leave it for the parents to sort out? One side of her hair is choppy, so Jessi braids it and it looks cute. I doubt it.

Margo is having secrets in her room.

Chapter 5
Jessi is slightly late getting out of ballet class and then there is awful traffic. AND she's picking up Wendy for the BSC meeting and lo and behond, Wendy isn't quite ready and Jessi is having kittens over it. Wendy reasonably asks why there is an issue with being 5 minutes late and Jessi freaks out about being half a second late.

They make it bang on time!

The Rowdosky's need a sitter and Kristy takes on her obnoxious super official persona. "Please consult your book." I smack Kristy upside the head with the book. Anyway, no one is available except Jessi at a push who doesn't want to be babysitting every day next week. She suggests Wendy goes and Kristy freaks out. No one is allowed to babysit until they are officially in the BSC and pass the test and drink the kool-aid!

Kristy quizzes Wendy and the Arnold's need a sitter. Mallory declines because she is ill and Kristy freaks out at her. Again. Poor Mal. No wonder she is ill. Wendy volunteers to go but Kristy says no and sends her on a test job at the Barrett's instead with Jessi.

Wendy asks if she's in the club and Jessi explains that she will be if she does well at the test-job. Mallory says congratulations and Stacey says "not yet." I imagine her saying this in a sinister voice whilst drumming her fingers together.

Lord, that was boring and hard work, stay tuned for the next installment, hopefully it will be more amusing!
