Chapters 1-5 Chapters 11-15
Chapter 6
The Three Musketeers are having a "tea" party in Karen's room. I say "tea" in quotations because they're really drinking apple juice. I can understand that you wouldn't want second graders making hot tea for themselves, but is iced tea really that weird? Anyway, the three of them are talking about elections "just like real grown-up ladies". Kay.
Karen says that she wants to be on the Fun Night Committee because, apparently, she "knows everything about having fun". o.O;; Nancy is unsure about whether she should run, and Hannie says that she won't because she doesn't like attention. Personally, I think Karen is just using some sort of mind control on them.
Andrew comes into the room, asking about his penny. He says the he doesn't think it's in this world anymore. Dude, they're goldfish now, remember? Karen tells him that's retarded, and that Mr. Pedo has the penny. Andrew ponders the mysteries of the universe some more before leaving.
They go back to talking about the election. Nancy is struggling to decide whether she should run, but worries that it would mess up her friendship with Karen. Karen encourages her to run, covering up for the fact that she's secretly using mind control, but Nancy is still unsure.
The Little Philosopher bursts in again, asking if he could disappear just like his penny. Does anybody else find it weird that this four-year-old is pondering life after death?
Nancy finally decides that she won't run, much to Karen's glee, I'm sure. The Musketeers say "one for all and all for one", completely butchering the phrase.
Watson comes home, and Karen tells him about how Andrew came into her room twice. Watson says that he'll "see what he can do" about the penny. :I Karen says that if he doesn't get it back, he'll still be worried about it when he's an old man, and proceeds to imitate an old man's voice. It's times like these when I'm thankful that I'm reading a book.
Chapter 7
On Tuesday morning, Karen is in Ms. Colman's class. She asks Karen to write down the list of kids who want to be second grade representatives. Karen pulls out her hot pink pen because she wants the list to be "gigundoly" beautiful. Use of the word "gigundoly" aside, why is she allowed to have a pen, anyway? We weren't allowed to have them until we were in high school...
She writes her name in big letters at the top and then writes down the other students' (Pamela, Jannie, Hank and Chris, to be exact) names. I just have this image of her name taking up the whole paper, with the other names jammed in the margin. Karen and her friends worry about the consequences of Pamela and Jannie running against each other.
Ms. Colman writes a few campaign rules on the board. They are as follows:
1. Don't spend any more than $5 on campaign supplies.
2. No campaigning during class.
3. No bribes.
She asks if anybody can come up with any more rules, and Karen decides on the rule "no false promises". Sounds good to me. Campaigning will start on Monday! Yaaay!
Chapter 8
On Saturday afternoon, The Three Musketeers are at Morbidda Destiny's yard sale. Hannie finds a teacup that looks like a black cat, but Nancy says that it's better for a witch and not right for "Lovely Ladies like us". :( I like black cats.
Karen sees something that catches her eye: a magic trick set called Mr. Wizard's Magic! As it turns out, Mr. Pedo is Morbidda Destiny's brother. Karen asks if she could help get the penny back, but MD says she can't because she can't get ahold of him. Karen tells MD not to let anyone buy the set, and she'll be right back.
So she goes to her house to get the money to buy the set, and goes to get Andrew. Apparently he sounds worried, because he's still worrying about his penny. God, does he really have nothing better to do? "Have no fear, Karen is here!" she thinks to herself before telling him that all of his worries are over. o.O;; Okay...?
Chapter 9
Karen brings Andrew over to the yard sale and tells him that Mr. Pedo is MD's brother. Naturally, the first thing he asks is if she can help get the penny back, but she gives him the same bullshit story about email not having been invented yet. However, Karen doesn't care about this because everything she needs is in the box.
Andrew points out, quite sensibly, that he already has a magic trick set and that it won't bring his penny back. Karen argues that it doesn't matter because, look, magic isn't real, see? Andrew dismisses this, much like he did in chapter four, by saying that there's a difference between Mr. Pedo's magic and the tricks in a set. GG, Karen.
At this point, MD steps in to agree with Andrew -- apparently, Mr. Pedo has always been magic, and made his rattle disappear when he was a baby. Karen knows that she's full of shit, but Andrew believes it. "Boo and bullfrogs," thinks Karen. What.
Chapter 10
Karen makes glittery signs that say "Vote 4 Karen" on them. They sparkle. Honestly.
It's Monday morning before class, so the kids are allowed to campaign. According to Addie, Pamela has been giving out stickers, making Karen wonder if there's some bribing going on. Hank claims that if he's elected, he'll get someone really famous to come to Fun Night. False promises, anyone?
Suddenly, a fight breaks out. Pamela and Jannie are bitching at each other because Jannie stole one of Pamela's stickers, but who cares because Pamela spent more than $5 on her campaign posters. Jannie decides to drop out of the race, and then class begins. Chris passes a note to Karen asking her to vote for him, and she proceeds to get all holier-than-thou about how she's the only trustworthy candidate not breaking the rules. God, she's such a brat.
