Jessi's Wish Part 1

I know what you’re thinking: how can she snark the story about cancer? Well, the story delves more into the ‘littlest cancer patient’ style than actual ‘cancer! oh noes!’. Thank God, otherwise I'd feel completely heartless as opposed to just slightly heartless

So, let's dig in to this Very Special Episode, Jessi's Wish
Chapters 1-5 )

#48 jessi's wish, jessi

"Having trouble with your insert-horrible-disease-and-or-disability-here? Do you wish that you had someone who could understand your insert-horrible-disease-and-or-disability-here? Do you want a community that accepts horrible-diseases-and-or-disabilities? Then come to Stoneybrook! Where freaks fit in!"

*dies* Thank you. That's the first thing that's made me smile all morning.

Yeah, when the twelve-year-old black girl looks weirdly like Katharine Hepburn, you know something strange is happening with the art.

I love you for including Ken Jennings in a BSC snark.

There are only so many times that one can include Ken Jennings in ANYTHING. I had to include him when I made the joke.

I think I need to work on ways to include him in my future snarks. I'm sure he would appreciate it (I follow his blog and message board).

The kids take it one step further and want to give the kids in the hospital pictures of themselves. Because everyone loves getting pictures of random strangers!

Oh, if only someone had done that for Stacey when she caught her diabeetus. It would have fixed everything omg yay!

The Cancer Kid always makes me think of this:

Great snark!

I think Dawn's place is in Stamford or something, which is apparently the only other city in the BSCverse's Connecticut.

Didn't Kristy get all high and mighty when talking about where she'd volunteer? Something like, "I thought, of course, there are so many things I'm good at and so many people who'd want my help." I wanted to slap her when she said that.

I also don't get why someone who is ONE YEAR OLDER than the oldest kids in the elementary school would want to be a club sponsor, and why they'd actually let her. I mean, come on, a fifth grader could be less than six months younger than Jessi. I think most kids in middle school would only go back to their elementary school to show off, not out of a genuine interest to help out.

Another somewhat unrelated thing: why are Mallory and Jessi eleven and in the sixth grade, and the rest of the girls thirteen and in the eighth grade? Most people I know turned twelve in sixth and fourteen in eighth. Are all of their birthdays in the summer/fall?

I think they're vampires who stopped having birthdays. However, I recall from the depths of my mind that their birthdays were all throughout the year. Sorry, I have nothing to back this up with--maybe it came from my BSC calendar from like 20 years ago.

Also, I'm someone with a late fall birthday, and I've met a number of people (mostly guys) who were a grade behind me but were older than me--sometimes by as many as six months. Bet that would go over well if I was a young sixth-grader watching an old fifth-grader.

I think November/December birthdays are on a borderline where parents get to choose when to start their kid in school. I have cousins who are exactly 4 days apart (opposite sides of the family), and the later of the two was a year ahead in school.
