BSC Mystery #1 Stacey and the Missing Ring

So, this book starts out with Stacey about to let us in on a huge secret, and imploring us to not tell her friends because she would so die if they knew. Wait, wait, dont tell me Stacey, let me guess. You let Toby get to second base in Sea City? You occasionally sneak puffs out of discarded cigarettes?  You think Karen Brewer is actually the anti- ( Read more... )

The whole "I'll sit for free until the ring is paid off" idea is so full of fail. If I were Mrs. G and thought my baby-sitter stole my diamond ring, there's no way in hell I'd let her baby-sit for me again. Also, having another sitter there doesn't make it better - especially when you don't even know this other sitter.

It *is* awfully suspicious that the ring magically showed up in a new hiding spot when Stacey came back. I wonder if Mrs. G secretly suspected that Stacey just brought the ring back due to a guilty conscience? It would be at the back of my mind for sure. But I guess it doesn't completely matter - Stacey (or any of the BSCers for that matter) wasn't going to come back, and Mrs. G found her ring, so all's well that ends well.

Thanks for the snark! This is one of my favourite mysteries because it was actually somewhat plausible. One thing though, why the eff would anyone buy their 13-year-old daughter a diamond ring? I'm 11 years older than Stacey and I still don't have one! (sigh) Mrs. McGill was right in saying that it was an inappropriate gift for Stacey, IMO.

Yeah, Kristy seems to do this a lot, thinking that people will have mad respect for the President of a baby-sitting club.

A diamond ring doesn't have to be that expensive. I don't think it's appropriate for a 14th birthday, but I did get a birthstone ring for my 16th, so did my sisters. Mine is a sapphire, but if my parents had an April daughter, she would have gotten a ring.

True enough. I guess I just picture Stacey taking after her mom and loving Tiffany's. Or maybe I'm just still bitter that my cousin got a ruby Tiffany's bracelet for no reason when she was 14, and I, 20 at the time, was still buying cheap jewelry that breaks/falls apart a few months later! lol (I still do, but at least now I have a topaz ring, so not all of my jewelry is cheap, just most of it!)
