1. Open the picture you want to use for the wallpaper. In this case, it's a 750 X 500 pixels picture. Crop it, so that it won't be distorted when you enlarge it to 1024 X 768 pixels.

2. Enlarge the picture, then duplicate it twice.

3. Blur the first duplicated layer & then set it to Soft Light, at 100%, so that the picture wouldn't look pixelated.

4. Now, the graphic looks a little blurry, so sharpen the second duplicated layer & set that to Soft Light at 100%.

5. Merge all layers. If you feel that the graphic looks too dark, duplicate it, then set that duplicated layer to Screen at 50%.

6. Merge layers again.

*You may skip steps 1-6.

7. Desaturate the graphic (shift+ctrl+U). Duplicate.

8. Invert the graphic by pressing ctrl+I. Change the blend mode to Color Dodge. Your graphic should look like a blank document.

9. Go to Fliter-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur. Drag the Radius slider until the sketch appears. Click OK when the lines look dark & the photo doesn't look too blurry.

10. Select the history brush; lower the opacity to 20%, then choose a large, soft-edged brush & paint over the graphic. As you paint, a faint version of the original color in the photo will appear. Keep the mouse button down the entire time as you paint.

11. Merge layers.

12. Go to Filter-->Texture-->Texturizer. Click on Canvas; set Scaling at 100%, Relief at 4 & Direction to Top.

13. Go to Edit-->Fade Texturizer. Lower the opacity to 30%. Merge layers.

14. If the color isn't intense enough, duplicate layer & set it to Color Burn at 42%.

Done!

let me know what you think. =)
