True American chainletter

May 28, 2006 08:16

So Princess sent me this email the other day, and I only just now opened it. I usually don't like chain letters and I never send them on, so I've probably accumulated a few decades of bad luck, but this one offended me.

It is time to change from REDNECK humor to TRUE AMERICAN Humor! Only I don't see it as Humor, but the correct way to LIVE YOUR LIFE ! If you feel the same, pass this on to your True American friends. Ya'll know who ya' are...

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase, "One nation, under God."

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never protested about seeing the 10 Commandments posted in public places.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You still say "Christmas" instead of "Winter Festival."

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You bow your head when someone prays.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You stand and place your hand over your heart when they play the National Anthem.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You treat Viet Nam vets with great respect, and always have

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never burned an American flag.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You know what you believe and you aren't afraid to say so, no matter who is listening.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You respect your elders and expect your kids to do the same.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You'd give your last dollar to a friend.

If you got this e-mail from me, it is because I believe that you, like me, have just enough TRUE AMERICAN in you to have the same beliefs as those talked about in this e-mail.

God Bless the U S A !

Git 'er done!!

So yeah. Yesterday Princess and I were talking and she has said something along the lines of "Did you get that redneck email I sent you? It's really funny! Read it!" And she sounded rather insistent, so I made sure I looked for it today. Then I read it, and was instantly irritated. So I replied.

Princess,

I was not offended that this was rednecky. I like redneck jokes and often listen to Jeff Foxworthy.

I ~was~ offended, however, by the obvious Christian-fanatic agenda of this chain letter. Case in point:

>>>You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase, "One nation, under God."
>>>You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never protested about seeing the 10 Commandments posted in public places.
>>>You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You still say "Christmas" instead of "Winter Festival."

These three alone imply that if you are not a devout, practicing Christian, then you are not a "True American". Considering part of the rights of people who live in the United States is the opportunity to practice their own religion without being persecuted or discriminated against. Being an American, born and raised, and not a Christian, I am offended by being accused of not being a "True American" because of my beliefs.

>>>You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never burned an American flag.

This I also must protest against. By saying that only people who have never burned a flag can qualify as "True Americans", that's like saying that only people who never protest against the government can be true Americans, which is ridiculous because that's what America was founded on - rebelling against the government of England.

I whole-heartily agree with the following speech from the movie "The American President": "America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've got to want it bad, because it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil who is standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the 'land of the free'? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the 'land of the free.'"

Princess, I know you thought this email was funny, but I don't. I'm not mad at you for sending it to me, but I need you to know why I feel offended by it. Please, next time don't send me Christian-fanatic pro-religion chain letters.

*rereads letter* Maybe I was over-reacting a bit. Maybe she was just sending it to make fun of it, as a "OMG I can't believe these ppl are so retarded" kind of email. I just... don't like religious zealots, and I don't really like chain letters, and when both happen at the same time I kinda flare up. One of the sides to being a Sagittarius...

In friendship they are reliable, and can be counted on. However, they have a quick temper and a biting tongue, often speaking before giving forethought to the full effect of their words. Their rage may pass quickly, but the stinging of their comments often remains. On the other hand, they are quick to forgive an affront and extremely dependable to a friend or family member who needs looking after.

Yup, that's me. Quick temper, and quickly passing rage. Later today I won't even give a thought to this email.
