Ahh, HBO.
Just finished watching the three-hour catchup mini-marathon of Carnivale. And I'm definitely interested. I thought, from the TWoP recaps, that it was going to be confusing, but it's really not. Reminds me a teeny bit of Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series, actually. Also, Nick Stahl is, now more than ever, my scruffy, unwashed, laconic, sweaty boyfriend. It's a strange thing. You look at him, and objectively, he's not particularly hot. He slouches, he limps, his mouth is hanging open half the time. But something about him... yum. Doesn't hurt that he's very good, acting-wise. Particularly considering his three lines or so per episode. He even looks hot shoveling food into his mouth. I may need to seek therapy for this.
The Kurgan. The Kurgan is on this show. And Lydecker from Dark Angel (who has undoubtedly done more distinguished stuff, but to me he will always be Lydecker). And Amy "Step Outside, You Nazi Cow" Madigan. And Lizzie from Undeclared. Hi, Lizzie! Hi, Lizzie's naked boobs!
I was going to be all snide about the bit where Jonesy mentions teaching Sophie to throw a slider, since I was fairly sure that the slider didn't come into common usage until after 1934 (the year given at the beginning of the first ep), but no... according to Roger Kahn's The Head Game: Baseball Seen from the Pitcher's Mound (an excellent book, if anyone is so inclined, which you're probably not), the slider started popping up in the late 30's/early 40's. (Though I guess I could still be a tiny bit right, since Sophie says he taught her when she was 11, and that was probably a good five or six years previous at least... and, you know, no one cares about this but me.)
The only problem is, I'll have to start DLing this stuff after our two free months of premium channels are up. Sigh. Just as well. 500+ channels are way too difficult to keep track of.
Bonus points to anyone who can tell me the name of the City Councilman in the third ep--the guy who didn't end up choking to death. The guy with the dark hair. I swear I've seen him somewhere before, playing... I wanna say JFK or something. What was he on? X-Files? What? This is driving me nuts, and neither TVTome nor TWoP can help me. Dammit.
