HELLO VVC ATTENDEES PLEASE COME BACK NOW. And safely.
A few fic recs to help everyone pass the time until that happens:
We Walk the Same Line, by
poisontaster. SPN, gen, Sam and Dean and another job that doesn't go like it's supposed to. This fic is everything I love about SPN, humor and banter and love and danger and protectiveness and working together, with some nice h/c, too. The structure is fabulous, and the dialogue is spot-on, and possibly my favorite thing about it is the contradiction between what Sam and Dean are saying and what they're thinking--it's like a whole Winchester-Normal People dictionary, but it's never overdone. I adore it.
And
fahye has been churning out drabbles, and here are a couple of my favorites:
Kara and Lee and Helo, swimming and flirting, ACADEMY HIJINX, and
Kara and Lee, S3 spec. Fahye + fic + BSG fic = very happy Brynn.
Old-school fandom:
Daddy's Work, by
miladygrey. Jack and six-year-old Sydney. OH SPYDADDY, I LOVE YOU.
And finally,
devilpiglet finished the fantastic Veronica/Logan fic she started a while ago,
Shelter, and I always love DP's work, but something about her and these characters is just a match made in heaven. Brilliant. The link above goes to the second part of the story; the first part is linked at the beginning, so don't forget to go there first. It's an AU post-S1, so no spoilers past S1.
I TiVoed the Dark Angel episode "Pollo Loco" last week, because there has been so much DA squee on my flist lately, and it was one of my favorites when the show originally aired, and also, well. Jensen Ackles.
There were a few things about this episode that stuck in my memory from when I first saw it: one, that this was the first time I thought the show might actually be doing something, trying to say something, trying to explore deeper issues. Two, that Jensen Ackles was by far the best guest star they'd had up till that point. And finally, that image of Max at the end, sitting in the forest with her brother dead in her lap and just sobbing, not knowing what to do with her hands, gah. Jessica Alba gets a lot of crap about her acting abilities, and rightfully so, but she was wonderful there, IMO. So while the episode overall wasn't as good as I remembered-at least not coming into it cold, having not watched the show in years-the end still made me cry, and I still think it was a great concept. Ben is so different than Max and Zack, is actually in some ways Zack's polar opposite, all visions and dreams where Zack is concrete and practical, with Max somewhere in between. Max and Zack and the others are damaged; Ben is broken, to the point where the end is inevitable. And the way the episode juxtaposes the X-5s' very childlike way of viewing the world-the stories they create to fill the void where their emotional lives are supposed to be-with what Lydecker wants them to be, thinks they are, is just heartbreaking. It's good to see the contradictions in Max throughout, the fact that she is obviously not what Lydecker thinks she is, but not exactly what Logan thinks she is, either. And again we see Lydecker's sort of twisted caring for his "kids" even while he utterly fails to understand them, and that was an element I always liked.
And while I am very clearly not unbiased on the subject of Jensen Ackles, one of the reasons that I'm not unbiased is this episode, where he impressed the hell out of me, so I feel justified in commenting that I still thought he was very good here. He's better now, I think, and I like that he's in a role that showcases his sense of humor, but he just nailed this part, all the intensity and vulnerability of it. That's kind of a tough line to walk believably, but I think he did it extremely well.
Also, Renfro annoyed me exponentially more this time around. Heh.
Speaking of which, I spent way too much time yesterday chasing down YouTube interviews with Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. They are so adorkable I could die. It is not fair for boys to be so hot and funny and articulate and affectionate and boy-like and dorky at the same time. If Padalecki would just CUT HIS DAMN HAIR, I would have nothing to criticize about them. Kristin, on the other hand (of "Watch With Kristin"), continues to be painfully awful to watch when interviewing hot young stars. Not that I would not be giggling and fangirling in a similar manner if I were interviewing hot young stars, but then again, I am not a "professional" entertainment type. Rope it in, Kristin, GOD. You're embarrassing everyone.
I also may have been listening to the local rock station's weekend "Dude, It's the 80's" awesomeness, as I do, and trying to make every song into an SPN vid in my head.
lcm, I (and Mr. McK) blame you for this new obsession of mine, by the way. I thank you… Mr. McK, possibly not so much. Hee.
In other CW Network news, apparently
Matt Czuchry (Logan on Gilmore Girls) is going to be guest-starring on Veronica Mars. As Logan's half-brother. Is it not enough that every freakin' fandom has a character named Logan? Do we have to start introducing them to each other now? FANNISH WORLDS COLLIDE. I am frightened.
In case anyone's wondering, I so do not want to be here today. My desire for fannish escapism seems to be at a high recently, and I think it's because being a grownup just fucking sucks sometimes. Sigh.
