First and foremost:
bitchinparty 2012
is a go! YAAAAAY I AM SO EXCITED. March 30 - April 1, 2012 (which is the same weekend as Emerald City Comic Con, oops; I will be bummed to miss that, but hopefully it won't cause undue angst for anybody). (Oh, FML, Gail Simone is going to be there. REALLY, ECCC? THIS YEAR? REALLY? Sigh.) ANYWAY. IT IS HAPPENING AND YOU SHOULD ALL COME BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE GREAT. And I am thinking that MCR's Reading set would be kind of a great thing to watch on Sunday night on the big screen. I mean. Leather pants! Brian May! Big screen! I want to make this happen. And it's only an hour! IDK, we'll see.
- In other news, I signed up for
bandomreversebb! I am kind of nervous, because I always get performance anxiety about writing to prompts, and I am kind of limited in the scope of what I CAN write for that fandom (though I'm fairly flexible WITHIN that scope, but still). But. It's only 5000 words, and I want to PARTICIPATE. And shit. So. \o? And I suppose if I don't get any of the claims I can write, I can just not claim anything. It's an AWESOME idea, though, and I am psyched for it!
- Jeffrey Foucault is apparently going to be playing here! THE SAME NIGHT THAT DAVID COOK IS PLAYING HERE. Really, Jeff? After all we've been through together? Unkind. So I may be making a kamikaze trip to Portland the next night. We'll see, but right now I'm feeling like doing something just a (very) little bit irresponsible. (Actually, how irresponsible this is depends on whether I'm taking any days off in there or am going to try to do this all WITHOUT taking any vacation. Heh. I'll sleep when I'm dead!)
- I've been reading
Writers on Comics Scriptwriting and while I've found some of the interviews really frustrating, some of them are fascinating.
Kurt Busiek (I think) had a great metaphor: the interviewer asked him what he thought of the state of superhero comics (this was 1999ish, I believe), and he said it felt like they were in this huge field and there was a tiny corner of the field with one gigantic city built on it. And every once in a while, someone like Alan Moore or Grant Morrison or whoever drives out into the field and builds something there, and everyone goes, "Oh, shit, we can do that!" and drives in a straight line right after him. And proceeds to build a suburb there until THAT becomes overbuilt and nobody wants to live there EITHER. So he thought that everyone should just focus on finding their own corner of that field, rather than overbuilding what's already been done. I thought that was such a great metaphor, not just for comics but for media in general; I mean, of course making art that people will actually want to buy is a factor, but... still. It's interesting.
The interview with Devin Grayson was also really interesting; apparently she got her start in part by writing fanfic. Seriously. I'm not sure whether she actually published it anywhere--she says something about how "I was writing what I guess is called fan fiction," which makes me think maybe she was doing it without realizing that there were other people out there doing it, too--or just sent it to DC or whatever, but. It did help her get started at DC, apparently. Crazy! I... suspect that would never work now, for a variety of reasons. Heh.
Chuck Dixon made me want to punch him in the nose, though. Again. Some more. And his homophobia didn't even enter into it! Heh. It's just that kind of boys' club attitude toward comic books that REALLY turns me off. Even when he's talking about BoP! And he said he really identifies with the Punisher. SERIOUSLY? WHO IDENTIFIES WITH THE PUNISHER? THAT IS A RIDICULOUS THING TO SAY. SERIOUSLY. Argh. How can you have written stories I like so much, and be such a jackass, Chuck Dixon? Sigh.
Haven't gotten to the Grant Morrison interview yet, though. Nor have I read Supergods, though I'm dying to. NEED MOAR TIME.
Speaking of which: time for work. Woo!
