Hello! I am here today, flist, to tell you about a little thing that people near and dear to me are working on (and therefore I am also working on it, by extension), and that thing is called:
COMBATCON DUN DUN DUN.
What is CombatCon, you ask? It's a hybrid fan con and western martial arts convention, where participants can swing a sword, meet a Jedi, pick up zombie makeup (and zombie apocalypse) tips, fire up the steampunk finery, and/or simply have an excuse to party in Vegas with other fans. (Did I mention it's in Vegas? IT'S IN VEGAS. June 24-26, 2011!)
With programming and special guests in sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk, pirate, and horror genres, as well as western martial arts, the weekend will include panels, workshops, demonstrations, a costume contest, a masquerade ball, a film expo, and all sorts of fun things.
Featured guests so far include Anthony De Longis (whose IMDB bio rivals Callum Keith Rennie's for fannish omnipresence, from Highlander the Series to Babylon 5 to Leverage to Masters of the Universe and about a billion other things; he is also a total badass with a whip, it is highly entertaining); Neal Stephenson; Roger Ma (author of The Zombie Combat Manual); Kyle Rowling, who played a Jedi in the last two Star Wars movies; and Nick Gillard, the fight director for all three recent Star Wars movies, as well as the stunt coordinator for Wanted and MI-5 and a whole host of other things. And one of the Gentlemen from BtVS! And other cool people! It's gonna be awesome!
So first of all, YOU SHOULD TOTALLY COME HANG OUT WITH US IN VEGAS. It will be super-fun! And I was also hoping that some of you might be willing/able to help in one or more of the following ways:
- Signal-boosting! This is huge, obviously. It's a fledgling con and the advertising budget is basically nonexistent, so we need all the word of mouth we can get. For instance, I feel like this would appeal to MMORPG folks (especially the Star Wars and LOTRO types), but since I'm not a gamer, I'm not really sure how to reach those people. Ditto for local Vegas/LA fen, who I suspect are going to make up the majority of our attendees. So any assistance in spreading the word would be much appreciated!
- Advice/connections! We are still looking for vendors, sponsors, panel participants, featured guests, and of course attendees. So if you know a person or business or website or forum who might be interested in any of those things, please let me know! (Alternatively, we have a little media kit that can be easily forwarded; if you'd like that, just email me, brynnmck [at] gmail.) When it comes to guests, again, this is a fledgling con, so the budget is very limited, PLUS it is coming right up, so we are not going to get, like, Gail Simone (SADLY). But we are still looking to fill some panel slots (particularly the "Geek Girls Rock" one, because as you might have noticed, the guest list is pretty dude-centric at the moment, and we would like to try to balance that at least a little bit, but I'm having trouble coming up with awesome girl geeks who are somewhat well-known, yet inexpensive and available on short notice [yes, I have considered emailing both Kira Von Sutra and Lindsey Way, SHUT UP]). So, again: any assistance much appreciated!
So ANYWAY. That is my spiel.
CombatCon! Vegas! June 24-26, 2011! COME HANG OUT WITH MEEEEE.
