Happiest of birthdays,
ancarett and my darling
qe2!
And then: Mr. McK and I had another Bones-watching lunch today!
I am conflicted! On one hand: HILARIOUS. And ROLLING AROUND IN BED. (Which alleviated my fear that DB and ED were somehow going to prove to not have the right chemistry for that sort of thing, much like DB and Charisma Carpenter did for me on AtS, though I continued to ship Angel/Cordy liek whoa. But I remember being disappointed by that aspect of "Waiting in the Wings." ANYWAY. Not an issue here! Ahem. Also, my GOD, Emily Deschanel has a beautiful rack, and that bra was amazing. IJS.) And MANY OTHER AWESOME THINGS that I will talk about in a minute.
On the other hand, as a season finale, I kind of wish they'd done more. I feel like if you're going to do an AU, you need to use it to illustrate something about the characters, and I'm not sure what we learned here or what progress was made, aside from Brennan acknowledging her fear/hope of becoming too invested in Booth, which she basically very nearly acknowledged in the last episode, and which we already knew, and which she promptly deleted. I think part of the issue was that we spent almost the whole time in Booth's head, and we KNOW what's going on in Booth's head, or at least I feel like I do-of course he wants them to be married and have a million bantery babies and be surrounded by their friends (and I am not sure what to do with Jared and Max being villains, to varying degrees, because I am really not sure how much the writers were actually trying to illustrate something about Booth's perspective and how much they just wanted to get everyone in there somehow). Brennan's the one who seems to be conflicted (though I still think maybe it's her who is the famous "acutely aware of that attraction and struggles against it daily," but that's just my pet theory), and she plays her cards much closer to the vest, so to have her viewpoint sort of shoehorned in at the end didn't quite work for me-I have trouble using Booth's wacky coma dream as illustrative of something about Brennan's state of mind/heart/etc.. So on that level, I am sort of "meh," and again, I think I would've been fine if it weren't the season finale, but I wanted more! (Plus it doesn't help that I was spoiled for them having sex, and while I figured it could be some sort of a cheat like this, I was hoping it wouldn't be. We were so close! JUST MAKE OUT FOR REAL ALREADY! Hee.) ETA:
svilleficrecs said below that maybe the switch from Hodgins' narration to Brennan's at the end was supposed to mean that it was Brennan telling Booth the story... I will say I like that angle on it a LOT better. Hmmm. *ponders*
HOWEVER. They were MARRIED. And they TOTALLY DID IT. And it was AWESOME. (When she was tying his tie, Mr. McK went, "AWWWW." Heeee. <3) And I loved Angela as the hostess, and Sweets as the bartender, and Hodgins as a crime novelist, and ZACK! HI ZACK! (The "you're the kind of guy who's stupid enough to get thrown in jail for a murder he didn't commit" line was AWESOME.) And getting to see a totally different side of the actors who play Vincent and Clark and WENDELL, who for some reason absolutely filled me with gleeeeeee every time he was on screen. I just. WENDELL! As a HEAVY. That made me HAPPY. (I looooooove Wendell. Especially when he's having male bonding with Booth. And male bonding with Booth in a laconic movie gangster kind of way, with the sense that both the actors are having a REALLY good time? AWESOME.) And Sweets and Daisy (with her TAMBOURINE!) were HILARIOUS. And I loved Booth and Brennan working together to solve the crime, and all of their friends lying to protect them, and the way all those lies were revealed one at a time to create the whole picture of just how much their friends love them, and Caroline being awesome. And Sweets SINGING! AMAZING. (How much do they need to do a musical episode? COME ON. DO IIIIIT. YOU KNOW YOU'RE DYING TO, BONES.) And the inside jokes-the thing about Zack, and "some people think I'm Gormogon, but I'm not." HEEEE. Because seriously, Gormogon is TOTALLY a band name (though I'm not sure it's THAT particular band, but hey). And they were all just having so much FUN, which is ALWAYS fun to watch.
And I also thought the climactic scene with Jared was really well-played all around, even though it was hard to be entirely emotionally invested in the AU-it always impresses me how, no matter what wacky plot twists there are, the connection between the actors and the characters shines through. (Off-topic, but that's actually the only saving grace of the Thing at the end of S3 for me: I hate what happened and I can't buy it and I wish they hadn't done it, but from that final scene with Zack and Brennan through to the end… that is some beautiful work, there, particularly by the actors. Breaks my heart every time.) And then, right on the heels of the emotional scene: MOTLEY CRUE! \m/ \m/ \m/ Oh, show. I really embrace your wackiness when it is THAT kind of wackiness. Heee.
So. I am conflicted! Many awesome things happened! I was just hoping for more from a finale. And now it seems like soooooooooooooo long to wait! I have had new Bones to look forward to almost constantly for the past couple of months! Withdrawal is going to SUCK.
On the plus side, at least my fic didn’t get Jossed. Hee.
And you know I am TOTALLY watching this episode again ASAP.
And then I had a little time to kill, and I happened to have the finale from SYTYCanadaD on my hard drive, so I watched a bit of that, and it is still fucking awesome. YOU GUYS. SYTYCD STARTS NEXT THURSDAY. Do you know how excited I am? PRETTY FREAKING EXCITED. (PLEASE be better than S4, show. I NEED YOU. Also, Melissa Williams for disco choreography in '09! THANK YOU.)
And finally, here is a very sweet Leverage fic I read today:
The Birthday Party Job, by
asimaiyat. Post-finale, mainly gen with some background Parker/Hardison-a great narrative voice, and just a kind of warm-fuzzy, "awww, yay" fic that has enough wry humor in it to keep it from veering into saccharine.
