Svart Alfar:

Jan 28, 2006 00:26

Svartalfar are the black elves of norse mythology who grew from the maggots of Ymir's flesh. They live in the earth and in stones. Although they have the shape of men, they are often misshapen. Their home is Svartalfheim, which lies under the earth, and here they stay during daylight on pain of being turned to stone.

The Svartalfar are often identified as dvergar and are hard to distinguish from the Döckálfar ("the earth-dwelling ones.")

This is awesome. I've kind of loved these creatures ever since I read Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry. I've always kind of thought of them as... drow meets Gollum. Heh. I guess that wasn't too far off. I'm glad I found this description of them.

Funny, but I can't find a definition for the Lios Alfar, who, in The Fionavar Tapestry are the light counterparts of the evil Svarts. "Most hated by the dark, for their name means light."
Oh well. Heh.
