this past week or so has been an exercise in extremes.
months ago i got involved in a program call the christian womens job corps. it's a little known program that teaches business skills and what not and sets you up in an internship. fantastic program, more on that later. the 'graduation' for it was on sunday, last sunday, no, last last sunday, hell i'm not sure, but sunday sometime. i was going to have to miss it because i was flying down to tampa for my annual appointment with dr letson, my surgeon, on monday morning.
so the plan was that i would come early so we could do some pictures and then run jump on the plane. then mom and i would go down to spend four days in florida before i came back to get serious about job hunting.
this appointment in itself was enough of a big deal, and i thought, at the time, that this confusion of flying out was hectic... silly me
while i was at the graduation place watching people run around getting things ready and waiting on the other girls to get there for a group shot, i got a call from my uncle saying that my dad was in the er dying
the cancer had eaten through an intestine and he was bleeding out
there was nothing to be done
he would not wake back up, and would be gone in two hours
i remember thinking it was very bizarre that this would happen when i already had the soonest plane ticket down there, but that i still would be too late.
so we got down there and instead of driving to the reserved hotel in tampa, we went to the kissimmee er, where the stubborn old bugger had woken up. they had given him some drugs and he went to sleep, peacefully, and an hour after i got there his body stopped working.
the next morning mom and i went to my appointment.
last year, the leg had healed to what they had expected. which was good, but also meant that that would be as good as it got and could now only maintain or deteriorate.
this year, the leg has healed completely! i now have a solid bone again and i can start pushing to use it more. rather exciting!
then mom and i headed north and met two of my cousins heading south to swap me off so that mom could go back with our very good friends in florida who had been diagnosed with throat cancer and had an appointment in tampa the same day i did, and i could get to granny's where we were planning the funeral (in madison, fl).
while granny, jeannie (dad's girlfriend that he was living with and all around fantastic woman), and i were beginning to plan the funeral, i got a phone call from lg electronics that they were hiring me (i had had an interview on friday). they said they were willing to wait for me to get back, so yay! i have a job! i will be the inventory supply clerk for the repair supply line. more on that later.
so then there was family and funeral with lots of food and a ton of fantastic old pictures.
that done, i went back down with jeannie, and her son tyler, to their house to begin trying to settle his estate.
the real fun parts of those are (1) that i'm the only person who can sign for things and (2) he refused to plan for the settling of his affairs /or/ tell anyone about anything he might have for us to deal with. not only that, but we haven't been able to get a decent straight answer out of anybody about what we need to do now. i have nothing nice to say about the process of settling someones estate and very little patience for anyone who refuses to get their own affairs in order, or at least tell someone what those affairs may be.
the most info we've gotten is from mom and jeannie (who get along great, btw) hacking into various systems by using his numbers.
at least over the weekend i was able to get to the coast for a bit. that always helps.
yesterday we flew back home. it's so great to be back in my own little apartment with my own comfy bed, (even though my fridge and garbage wreaked, but that's been taken care of now).
the estate and affairs are still not in order, but hopefully i can do most of that from here, and then finish them up with a short trip down in a few weeks.
and i start my new job on monday!
