today has been a long day. finally nearing the end, i think it will balance out. but there's something a little unfair about starting the day with jackhammers and ending it with a dj under my kitchen. it was unquestionably march here today... the wind talking in the tree branches and any paper that could feel the breeze acting like a living thing. all i wanted to do was find a kite and try to catch some of that wind with it. instead i took a couple hour detour to make sure bastian was okay.
bastian's had some odd behavior on and off since nov. or so, and was in pretty rough shape when i got home from seattle last month... had obviously lost weight, hadn't been cleaning himself, puking more, etc. was obviously distressed about not seeing me for so long. it took a while to get him started on back to normal but there was a week or two where i quit worrying. then about a week ago he started slipping back to those same behaviors. between that and finding a few things on the recalled foods list that he eats now and then, well, yeah.
i couldn't vouch for how often he'd been urinating (apparently i should know waaaay more about my cat's elimination habits than i do.. he's a very private cat when it comes to his backside! seriously!) so they wanted to see him right away, and did, but it looks like he's mostly okay. the vet thinks he got into a downward spiral with not eating and puking etc and just hasn't quite been able to get out of it.
when he was in for his checkup in august he weighed in at a tad over seven pounds, at least a pound from what the vet would have liked him at. finally got him to gain some weight this fall, but all that work and more is undone now. he weighed in a little over five pounds today. they gave him fluids and he gets to try steroids for a while to help him over this, plus some even blander food. poor kitty. he should be fine, but i'm still sad for him. guess it's double plus cuddling for the katten until he gains some weight.
now it is time to think about curling up, and hoping the road work doesn't start quite so loud so early tomorrow. there's only so many days in a row i can run on six hours of sleep before it starts to show.
