What I find most infuriating about the new Star Trek movie is not that it was bad or a waste of my 2 hours 6 minutes. No, what drives me nuts is that so many other people liked it, which means that I'm horribly out of touch. See, for me, this wasn't a close thing and hardly even a matter of taste. The writing was bad, the plot was neither

* I didn't watch it as a Star Trek movie - I saw it as a good action movie that happened to be set in the star trek universe. In a good action movie, script and plot don't have to make sense or even be that good, it only has to get you to the next big 'splodey thing.
* It was an elegant way to provide a reboot, while still keeping a connection to the old cannon
* Set design. They clearly put a lot of effort into making the sets look like the inside of a real working ship.
* The cast. Even though the script was horrible at points, and the plot didn't make alot of sense, the cast did an amazing job bringing their characters to life - they really sold me on the idea that we were looking at younger versions of spock, uhura, scotty, etc.
On the other hand, I can see why you didn't like it. Trek has always shined when it is character driven - in this movie, the only purpose of the characters was to spout dialog so that they could hit the next plot points and move to the next 'splodey thing. And that dialog was usually horrible. And those plot points were either lazy cliches or just flat out didn't make sense.
Also, I think a lot of people were expecting this to be even worse than star trek 5, so when it turned out to be not completely totally awful, they declared it a great movie.
