Last night we went down to D-Town. The Hard Rock Cafe. My Aunt Grace is leaving this morning back home. She has been in town the last few weeks because my cousin, Ashley, was due to have her baby. She did and Selina is gorgeous! So, we sent her off in true Mexican form... with dinner. What? We like food. It was good times. When Rick & Mindy showed up with the twins, we had fun showing them the water display out in the atrium of the CompuWare building (which is where Hard Rock is). The display is pretty cool and the twins loved it. So, we all had a good family meal. We talked and laughed. Passed the babies around. Made them try eating things, like tomatoes and onions. Christopher spun Isaac around until he got dizzy and then tried to put him down only Isaac got scared and almost started crying because everything was spinning. Poor kid. It was good stuff. Afterward we said our good-byes to Aunt Grace. And we left most of the fam still there at Hard Rock. On our way home, we passed an accident.
It was on I-75 southbound, and it was on one of those bad corners (around the Fort Street/Schaefer area) where, if you weren't paying attention, you'd probably plow into the accident too. Anyway, Christopher and I passed the accident and didn't really get a good look at it because the SUV who was driving in the same lane (the left lane) where the accident had occured swerved into our lane to miss hitting them. Christopher mentioned that I might want to call my mom because she left behind us and we wanted to tell her not to drive in the left lane through that stretch because the accident was blocking the left lane. And as I picked up the phone and started to dial I thought to myself that my brother and Mindy left before us but they were probably already passed it by then. My mom answers. And then she says that she just got off the phone with Mindy and they were the ones in the accident that we just passed! Christopher and I get off on the next exit and head back.
We pulled over on the very opposite shoulder of I-75 (the right shoulder of the northbound lanes). Christopher, with apparently little thought to anything else, leaves the car with me in it and it still running, runs across the northbound side of the interstate and hops the wall over into the southbound traffic where Rick & Mindy were with the twins. Yes, that's his normal behavior when stopping for an accident (he just gets on scene as quickly as possible), but that's because I usually don't get out of the car. Of course I'm not staying in the car when my family has been in an accident! Besides the fact that when we pulled back up on the scene, after passing it that first time and turning around, the scene had gotten a lot larger! Now there were two semi trucks over on the other side of the southbound lanes also involved in an accident now and traffic is barely getting by through the middle lanes. The scene looks a lot bigger now. So, I leave the car too. Run across the northbound lanes and hop the wall.
So I sit with Mindy and the twins in the car pretty much the whole time. Family starts showing up as they get to the scene on their way home. Of course they all stop. We're Mexican. It's what we do. We ALL stop. Anyway, since my family is running from car to car and getting the scoop - did I mention we're Mexican? it makes us nosey too..... Anyway, as it turns out, some stupid effin drunk lady lost control of her car, spun out in the middle of the road and caused Rick to hit her broadside. Thankfully it wasn't very hard because there wasn't a lot of damage to their car, the airbags didn't go off, and the kids were pretty calm. Then their initial accident caused another vehicle about 5 minutes later to slam on their brakes causing a semi truck to do the same. That semi somehow pins another car against the right shoulder while a second semi rear ends the first. This blocked the two right lanes. At least that's how I think it went. It was a mess. We finally left when the cops showed up. They arrested the drunk lady who caused the entire thing and impounded her car.
So, for everyone who thinks they're okay to drive after a couple, do me a favor.... don't. Just don't drive. That stupid effin lady could have killed someone. My brother. My sister-in-law. The twins. Any one.
So, if you do drive drunk or even slightly intoxicated, have the decency to kill yourselves and not my family or anyone else's family, alright?
Thanks.
