The Woods

I went for a walk in the woods tonight. Now I must admit, as I have not grown up in or around woods (as I'm sure many people have for the last 100 years), I still find them pretty intimidating sometimes, especially when they are dark and quiet. Even the sound of a duck can sound scary.

Anyway so I was wandering through the yard at the Stauffers (it's a wood, trust me) and I turned off my flashlight (sorry, I mean torch) and paused to soak in my surroundings. If only I could've seen them. My eyes squinted to see anything at all except shapes in the darkness, and these shapes started taking forms. I saw a giant caterpillar, but it was only a hedge. I saw different shades of black and grey, and dark quiet cylinders of trees, silently staring at me in the darkness. I would've been totally lost without a torch. Then I looked up and saw above the trees to the sky: the beautiful eternal sky! I've always remembered from Duke of Ed how to use the Plough constellation to find north. At least I learnt something useful then: to know how to find directions in a dark wood at night.

So this little excursion tought me a lesson. In darkness we get lost, with light we can find the way. When things are dark, the truth changes form, and small things become big monsters (or insects in my case). What things seem friendly in day become threatening and judgmental in darkness. The paths disappear in darkness. I'm sure you can all guess the final part of the analogy.

I'll see you all soon.
