I promise, resolution next time. But yeah, it's a long quest and they knew it would be from the start. No fun at all.
If I can get a proper handle on it, I want to write a bit about Spike and the kids, because I don't think it's simple in this verse. They aren't biologically his, everyone knows it, and that will hurt in his pride. Which doesn't mean full-on angst, but is interesting.
Ooh, that sounds most interesting about Spike and the kids. I hadn't realized until just this moment that the kids weren't his - I assumed some kind of magical handwaving. But sperm donation isn't a solution I've ever seen for Spuffy before, and now I'm intrigued. I understand his ambivalence in this fic a lot better now, too. It seems like that ambivalence might be quite a dangerous thing to Spike&Buffy's relationship...
Besides, it turns out I'm fascinated by the theme of Spike and kids - anyone's, really, but especially ones that he's parenting.
So, yes, I'm totally interested in more exploration of this topic.
Ack, angst! Love it. Especially that you can tell Spike's drunk when he starts using the proper plural of 'codex'. Clever move making us all wonder how exactly Buffy did get pregnant...
(And alas for the lack of dragon! :( Still, quest makes up for it. :D)
I'd like at some point to write Spike and the kids, or Annie at least, because it's not simple and I doubt it would be cute. Well, at first. I'm pondering exactly how that goes.
Heh. Nope, a two day quest without character deaths isn't in Spike's cards. I quite like writing baby fic where it isn't about the cute; there's a genuine conflict going on within Spike over this. And someday, I may manage to write it out...
Oh my. Not a development I had thought about. Love these conversations between Spike and Giles (and Giles' minions). The respect that should have been there all along seems to be present. And now another baby? In the other original slayer household. Wow.
*g* There have been the odd references to Buffy's children in various stories, and sometimes Spike has been in the mix too. But this is the first time I've written straight out that no, there's no handy magical trick that means they're biologically Spike's. Which has implications for quite a bit of emotional contradiction, I hope. I may get round to writing it, if I can work it out convincingly.
I suspect Spike and Giles get along best over the phone, and intermittently! But there have been various incidents now which brought them closer together, and Spike is sticking at this dragging quest which has to get him some overdue respect - it helps balance them, I think.
This is a wonderful addition to the Rulesverse. Poor Spike! I do feel for him, both the lack of reaction he got for his slaying of this Gombril thing, and for the baby thing.

But gee, I'm ready to be at the end of this slog of a quest. They're not quite so thrill-a-minute as they appear in the movies, huh?

Nothing is ever simple for these folks.
Headhunters? Couldn’t catch a three-toed sloth.
Still there is some comfort in being effective.
Mazel tov to the Summer-Pratts (or whatever you're calling them)!

The baby thing needs more space to be addressed properly. I'm working on working on it...
