fic roundup

Meme, because it's the end of the holidays and I don't want to think about work, and I finally, finally have my internet back.

Welcome to 2010, and I hope it's a good one. I did think about doing the full 'how the noughties treated me' meme, but there's too much of the personal in there. Let's say LJ and fanfic in general is a big tick in the plus column, though!

Meme: Fanfic.2009, stolen from everyone

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, fewer than you thought, or about what you predicted?

Probably more. I was new to it last year, and wrote masses, so I rather assumed I'd tail off. I did write less short fic and fewer challenges, but kept up a steady ficathon participation, and then invented the Rulesverse to keep me scribbling!

Where did you publish/archive your stories?
Here. AO3. Still_grr and Fantasmagoria. And the occasional one in pairing-specific places.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2009?
Well, Faith/Giles was a surprise. But I think Cordelia/Lorne probably beats it!

What's your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest?
That's got to be the Rulesverse. I made a verse! With PowerPoint! It's far from the most read, and teeters on self-indulgence, but that would be why it's my favourite.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
This Side of Forever, which is why posting at Seasonal Spuffy is a joy.

Story most under appreciated by the universe?
Learning to Be Flexible, not because it got no love, but because Giles/Illyria/Spike threesomes deserve to be worshipped, dammit.

Story that could have been better?
Probably my Yuletide assignment, In Her Element. I like it, but it's flat.

Sexiest story?
Our Man In Manila. Others (Curves, For One Night Only) have more outright porn, but that one is simply about getting off, and I think it works. (Go, read it!)

Most fun story?
Bloody Awful Poetry ( which starts here). Pure joy.

Story with single sweetest moment?
I'm going with Choosing Dreams, and the ending. Not a shipper fic, no snuggles, but heartwarming, I think.

The story that made you cry?
The End. Because I don't write apocalypses, as a rule, and then I did.

Hardest story to write?
My secret slasha was interesting, and I might just write about that elsewhere... Maybe Majority Rule, because I was consciously trying for plot, and following Ningloreth's suggestion to avoid plotting everything at the start, just see where my story went. It worked, but there were hair-raising moments when it almost didn't.

Easiest story to write?
Long Distance which wrote itself.

Most overdue story?
Sigh. I don't miss deadlines, even if it means I turn in something mediocre instead (I'm like this at work too, and it's not really a virtue). But I was away the weekend the Darla ficathon posted, and I haven't pimped An end of It here yet, so my one day overdue comes in handy. Go, read! It's historical Darla, and there were so many great entries in that ficathon.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
See above, re Majority Rule: a great way to get plot. I also enjoyed writing my two Yuletide pinch hits, especially my fic based on Stephen Fry's The Liar which is hugely silly but I adore. Real pressure makes me stop faffing around and put something together well.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
Must. Write. Gunn. I have had this as a goal for about a year, and still nothing but a couple of add-on parts. He's a character I think I could write about, but I've never had the right bunny for him.

Total word count for 2009:
??? Not a clue. Many, many thousands, anyway. Even though most of my fic is short, it does tot up.
