New Year proper: back home, work tomorrow

Jan 02, 2012 15:56

So I was going to post a slightly melancholy thing about new years, old years passing, how nothing in my life seems to change as the years pass and that makes me less and less content, and how one year pretty soon there will be a massive change in that 'Christmas at parents' won't be possible any more and I don't have anything to replace it...

But then That Thing That May Happen came a step closer, possibly, and a really big life change also came accordingly closer, and I went EEEEEEP FEAR OF CHANGE FOETAL. Hopeless, innit? Though I did manage to un-foetal enough to turn out a few cupboards and clean some things off the back of Possible Changes, which is never a bad thing.

Anyway, I have a few Christmas decoration pictures for those who would like to see some Anglo-Germano-Swedish traditions.

Little red candles in little red candlesticks

Elegant angel with holly (and candlesticks)

A woollen tomte, or Swedish house-gnome, who protects the house while we sleep

And a band of carol singers with conductor. You can just see the saint-conductor's keys (is he St Peter?) but not the singers' little metal lantern - bits knocked into the main wooden figures which have survived since my mother's childhood in the 40s, if not longer.

Plus on a damp Boxing Day, a walk in the local park, and a mulberry from my childhood that's now in need of remedial propping, but is still rather magnificent!

Plus the bandstand (I think the weather vane has owls, though they do look a bit like cats), and the local school (from the 19th century, not

I have two things to say about Sherlock: though it has its flaws, I like its messed-up sex and love dynamics far more than the ongoing Cult of Motherhood on Doctor Who; secondly, I really, really wish I hadn't had to watch it with my parents. Reading slash and kink fic is not conducive to looking oblivious among RL people.
