Awww, snort...

My poor colleagues... it's tough if you're a shift worker and a huge footie fan. You negotiate to spend the crucial hours of England's last group match on the off shift (rumour suggests some interesting rewards requested for swapping this particular shift). You may even work short hours for the week and get less pay, but you do it, because you love the football.

You settle back in your work's break area, where there's special World Cup telly provided... and then there's a power blackout two minutes before the only goal of the match.

People at their desks in my area knew the score, because the delivery bloke in the loading bay outside turned up his radio and started cheering. But that's the other end of our quite large building and no good to the telly-watchers.

Most of us went home early, due to absence of work that could be done and increasing sweatiness of glass offices without aircon. Other Van!Blokes were seen being heroes outside various electricity-free pubs, blaring out their radios while decorating the vans with sudden England flags. It's a good 2-3 mile diameter area affected, possibly more at first, so they couldn't just move up the road to another pub.

Weird timing, no?
