oh look, a poem...

this is a poem i've been working on and its not what i would like it to be. so i need a fresh set of eyes. I sent it to one person and got the 'oh, i like it.'

Dragonflies hang from the porch cover,

And at night their bellies glow orange,

Warm and friendly electric flames

Burning into the night,

Comforting and steady at two a.m.

I watch them hover, suspended in darkness

From my sprawl on the beige carpet,

Wearing soft faded jeans, a shirt, no bra,

Playing dvds I’ve seen a hundred times before.

A cricket or two sneak across the floor,

They’re enjoying the air drifting in

Through the screen door like I am,

Cool air even at the end of a California summer.

But I’ll always feel as if something is missing,

So many changes happening in a short space of time.
A childhood home: gone; friends: lost; my family: torn.

My cats are not here to rub against me,

To walk over me and stare out the door.

I feel better at these hours of the clock,

I’m allowed to feel my sense of loss

With those warm bright dragonflies outside the windows,

Unconditionally shining with a reassuring glow

At the edge of the lawn.
