I don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but there's a new Star Wars film currently in production. It's called
Star Wars: Secrets of the Rebellion and George Lucas does not seem to be involved in its creation in any way... well, other than creating the universe, the characters, and the basic canon that makes up this thing we know as "Star Wars," which if you think about it is a title that, by itself, screams cheesy sci-fi movie.
Anyway, based on what I saw after visiting the movie's website, which I conveniently linked to above, this looks like a very low budget, independent film. But it looks like their trying to create a serious, feature-length film as opposed to some puffed up fan flick. According to the FAQ, "It is shot entirely on a green screen background and edited using the same software package ILM used to make Revenge of the Sith. It’s being composited with the same software used to blend Return of the King as well. By using professional actors I also hope to set a new standard in the acting ability and caliber of performance in the Star Wars Indie production genre but my number one concern is to cast Star Wars fans." So I'm not too worried about this being a cheap, Mickey Mouse production.
I severely doubt I'll be able to see it in theaters here in the DC/MD area, but I wouldn't mind seeing it on DVD. It definitely seems like something worth watching since it blends that down-to-earth, indie feeling that the first Star Wars trilogy had with the availability of better special effects technology that the newer trilogy had. Whether or not it will be any good is another issue entirely. I'm still pretty neutral at this point. I'm just really interested in seeing it.
Update: Speaking of sci-fi movies, I took a quick look at
Metacritic to see what the critics had to say about Rise of the Silver Surfer. Apparently it's getting panned, but I had to share this one critic's comment that I particularly enjoyed, "The silliest sci-fi movie since 'An Inconvenient Truth.'" Hmm, maybe I should start referring to An Inconvenient Truth as The Rise of Manbearpig.
