Day 17 of
Prompt: "You should give me three good reasons to stay."

Different take on "Older and Far Away"

Richard leaned over the kitchen island as Buffy was arranging the deviled eggs, his self assured smile in place. “Xander says you’re single, but there’s this whole vibe with that beat up guy." Richard waved his hand at the word "vibe," like that made any kind of sense. "Sooo, if you’re even remotely interested, you should give me three good reasons to stay.” Richard leaned back, smugly sure this girl was a lock

Buffy looked over Richard’s shoulder, eyes resting on her battered vampire’s face. He was talking with Dawn and Clem, laughing, gesticulating wildly, nearly spilling his half full beer with every motion. She made a snap decision.

“No, Richard, I can’t think of even one. Thanks for playing. See yourself out.” Richard was obviously not expecting to be shot down so handily, but he gathered his coat, heading toward the front door.

Buffy wasn’t a coward, but her stomach churned as she marched into the living room, waving the h’ors doevres a bit forcefully.

“Okay, gang, news flash. I am not on the market for your random fix ups. I am not a project. I am depressed and angry, but I don’t need a man to fix me. You have no say in who or what I do.” Spike looked at her, holding breath he didn’t need. Buffy continued, “Spike and I are in a relationship. He’s pretty much the only thing, um, person, I’m doing that’s going right.” She took her eyes off the plate of eggs long enough to look right at Spike, “I’m a mess, but I’m getting better,” she said only to him. “You’re helping.”

Tara’s “Oh, thank gods” broke the tension and the room erupted.

After the initial shock, Xander watched the mantle of calm happiness settle on Buffy.

Gathering himself, he realized If Buffy could do it, he could, too. “Anya, we need to talk about the wedding.”
