An Indian legend holds that when God created man, he and man would walk
together often. Then God had to leave to go back to where Gods live and man
worried that he would have no one to walk with and would be lonely. So God lay down
in the sand and had the man scratch his outline in the sand with a stick. When
God stood up, he looked at the outline and then created a creature that
conformed to the outline. It was the dog, it was God's gift to man and the dog
became man's companion and walked with him.
