"i never bring up vegetarianism but when someone finds out i am one they go out of their way to be like MEAT MEAT MEAT MEAT. it's offensive and really commonplace."

what is with that??? seriously, it's the most obnoxious thing. and just about every vegetarian i know has experienced this. i have always wondered why it's so hard to just let us eat vegetables?

I swore I wasn't going to comment in this post but for the love of GOD, I can't go to a single family gathering without being taunted by meat eating family members. 15 years, 15 YEARS, gimme a break already, shoooosh.

me too, and it makes NO SENSE.

another one is the "you mean you still do that?" as they insist you try a piece of something. as though it could only possibly have been a "phase"

oh man that "phase" bullshit. when i was 15, i'd been vego for a year. i'd wanted to be vego since i could talk, but my parents wouldn't let me, eventually it was my teenage "rebellion" to go vego. anyway, i was at my friends place for dinner, our families were having dinner together... my friend's stepmum offered me a slice of pig and i said "no thankyou, i am vegetarian". sooooooo politely. she rolled her eyes, sighed loudly and turned to my parents and said (RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME), "both my daughters went through that phase, don't worry, she'll grow out of it".

in that moment i knew i would be vego for LIFE. i vowed to myself even harder than before that i was *never* going back.

that stupid old twat.

i heard the same thing from my mother when i was a teenager... over 10 yrs later she still "forgets" that i'm a vegetarian. um... how can you "forget" that your only daughter is a vegetarian of 15 or so years if you've lived with her for most of that time? (we still live together now, and she still does this)

people are so weird. when i first stopped eating meat i was about 13 or 14 and my mother said "then i guess you'll have to learn to cook," which i did. i am now a much better cook than her, except that you won't get any meat at my table ;)

my family is the same, especially my sister's husband and one of my brothers. grrrr!! i hate it! one of my brothers says to me "so long as your vego i'm gonna eat twice as much meat to make up for the fact that you don't eat meat, so there's no point you even being vego HAHA". what a fucking horrible thing to say. especially as i NEVER say a thing to them about eating meat unless i am asked about my views ( ... )

There definately is a "MEAT MEAT MEAT" thing, but for every one of them, there is a "OMG, how can you eat that, it is all bloody & gross," out there.

last family gathering i was at, vegetarianism was being likened to an eating disorder. lovely!
