For those of you knowledgeable about accounting, the end of the month is a big deal. Balance the books, close things out, tidy up. The good news is that, thanks to computers, a LOT of the mess is taken care of automatically. Neat. Tidy.
What most DON'T know, is how crazy the FIRST of the month is. You see, you have your daily processing. Only AFTER that does the monthly start. If you're in a moderately large company like mine, the daily stuff takes up most of the night; many have been the times when we've barely met our processing window. This means we're doing the monthly processing during "normal" working hours, when everyone and their uncle is tapping into the processor. THAT means that the CPU is getting pegged, a backlog of work is developing and everyone is STILL trying to push their crap through like it was a normal business day. On top of that, you get those people phoning in with their precious "time sensitive" jobs, or Very Important Project that just can't wait.
On top of all this, I'm now Primary On-call. I've been working first shift for two months, and now I'M the "Go-To Guy" if things hit the fan during off hours. As a Sign of my Elevated Status, I have a cell phone lent me by the company. OOooo...shiny.
Yes...go ahead. You may touch me.
