Tonight was this year's first rehearsal for Perfect Harmony. Between our fundraiser, the retreat and an awards banquet, March is going to be a VERY busy month! The music that's been presented for the June concert is politically conscious, considering that a constitutional amendment is on the State's table "protecting" marriage by banning homosexual unions of ANY kind, effectively cutting off civil unions as well as not recognizing homosexual unions that may be valid (or become valid) in other states. Many of the songs have children in their themes ("Biu Doi", "On Children","Lost Lullaby"), while others are aimed at marriage ("Get Me To the Church on Time", "Marry Us"). We also have a purely patriotic set, centered on Randall Thompson's "Testament of Freedom". All-in-all it looks very exciting.
It looks as if I'm going to be taking over the Treasury again. This really doesn't surprise me, as Mark, the fellow who relieved me of the post, has been overwhelmed by his work duties, which keep him in Chicago most of the time. While I can do without the hassles that come with the position, I have to admit I missed being on the "inside" and KNOWING that things are being taken care of.
We held auditions for the fund-raising Cabaret, which will be held in mid-March. I did two pieces: A duet, "The Song That Goes Like This" from "SPAMalot", with Bob, and a solo - "Popular" from "Wicked". I know both these songs cold, and performed them well in practice, but nerves got the best of me during the audition and I blanked on the lyrics in BOTH songs! AAAAaugh! I'm glad my livelihood doesn't depend on such performances, or I'd be dead meat. As it is, I'm pretty sure I'll still get in, due to our directors' experiences with me in the past. Besides, if I'm going to fall apart, NOW is the time to get it out of the way. I know I can do them better; THEY know I've done both songs better. At least I have room and time to improve.
