I know I don't have any friends on here, but I'm hoping some one will pop by and see this.
Lora Innes, author/artist/creator of the amazing webcomic
The Dreamer (a story about Bea, a teenager in modern Boston who travels back to the revolutionary war in her dreams) is AMAZING!
She began this really great endeavor last year called
Comic Creator's Alliance. It's a coming together of web comic creators across the board, they each drew a character from their comics to put in a wallpaper that could be downloaded after donating to the site.
100% of the donations were split down the middle, 50% going to the amazing
Gracehaven House and 50% going to the fabulous
Love 146. In case you're not aware, both of these organizations work towards ridding the world of Human Trafficking. A fancy, polite way of saying slavery in modern times. The US is not even immune, and it is estimated by UNICEF that over 27 MILLION people are being held against their will, doing everything from cleaning houses to forced prostitution. That's MORE THAN DOUBLE the amount estimated to have been enslaved in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The two organizations that the money goes to work explicitly with children who have been brought into the slave trade for the explicit intent of being used as sex slaves. These two organizations work to help these children, all under the age of 18, to move past the traumatized and scarring experiences they have been through. They help them with living a life AFTER they have been rescued. And also to spread awareness and prevention to keep such a horrendous thing from happening to more innocent people.
So if you write, illustrate, or read webcomics, spread the word, or donate your time or money (once it's completed in about January) It's such an amazing cause. And what's better is there are other organizations working towards the same goal, some probably in your area! Look into it, and help out.
We can bring a TRUE end to slavery. But we all need to help.
I would like to add that
The A21 Campaign is an organization that I work indirectly with through an organization I'm involved with on my college campus. They also work towards the rehabilitation of survivors, raising awareness, and they also work with legislation to help pass laws and protections against the human sex slavery business.
Their website includes a lot of amazing things, including an entire section dedicated to resources that might be good to know (such as Signs of Trafficking and Emergency Contacts) so that you can be aware of what to do if you suspect something fishy.
