I never understand the need for a remake of anything. If it is good, then watch the original. If it is bad, then what is the point of making a bad film again?
Hmm! And what if my favourite foreign film happens to be American? Like, y'know, I might be one of the millions of people for whom American is foreign?
And anyway, I agree with Veronica. I'm not in favour of remakes, whether in a different language or (as in the case of The Thomas Crown Affair) merely a different country by dint of the original being In The Past ;)
There is a subtle question though in terms of film adaptations. For example, if there has been one great film made of Macbeth, does that mean there shouldn't be another interpretation 30 years later? If a story has become enough of a classic, maybe it is ok to rework it. I would find it hard to choose between the black & white film of Pride and Prejudice, and the BBC adaptation some years ago now. Both are terrific, and bring something different to the story.
