Ah, that's what happened, I just heard a random comment (in an interview with Mark Knopfler, strangely enough) and had assumed it was during a race.
Most likely two factors (other than skill) that make the difference between a rallye and you or me driving down a country lane: - no danger of oncoming traffic, giving them twice as much space - blind faith in their co-pilots who tell them exactly what's coming up and being able to execute the commands exactly.
