june 18, 2005 should just go down in history.
the day started out with bob evan's cinnamon pancakes. how can a day that starts out that good go wrong? well, it can't, so don't worry. the day continued on after getting ready, maria finding her lost skirt, and then discovering FREE parking. hallelujah!
once inside, maria and i roamed the tents, wrote down times of bands, and then ventured to find the matches tent. you probably don't know, but i love their merch girl monica. she's so awesome. she was like, "i didn't know you'd be at the first one!!" ohhh hells yeah. they had a mesh screen at the back of the tent. i saw justin and shawn drawing on something behind the tent on the lawn. i was talking to monica and telling her how i made the shirt that was too small for my boobs into a sweatshirt when i saw justin in the corner of my eye standing right at the mesh screen waving frantically. i love that boy, he's so adorable. i didn't see shawn wave, but apparently he did. we got some flyers to pass out and set out to begin our day. first we said hey to nate and spencer. i bought punk goes 80's hells yeah. spencer had the magazine, so i explained to maria what it was, and nate told us where to go get them, but then gentleman spencer just gave us his. fabulous.
we walked around listening to bands, visiting booths, and passing out flyers. shawn's artwork in the fuse tents is insanely good. seriously, check it out and admire the talent. then we hit up the all american rejects...JUST TO LAUGH AND THINK OF OUR YOUTHS. maria listened to underoath for awhile. she didn't like them, but she thought spencer was cute. we ran into rob. he was wearing a sweater in the god awful heat. we watched matchbook romance, and by watched, i mean saw absolutely nothing. but we got some pretty good spots to enjoy kenny and his amazing voice which gave me goosebumps even in the heat. ooh kenny.
we started making our way to the volcom stage when we ran into tori. there was already a crowd waiting for the matches. then i saw it: bryce. bryce the fucking bastard from california. i'm not really sure why he's on the tour, and i kinda hate him with all my soul. not to mention he plays bass for dave when he has a full band. so it just made me sad. grrrr. i was kind of on the side, but i was so ready to go fucking nuts. and i did go fucking nuts. the boys did so well. jon was bleeding. it was out of control. justin laughed at me cause i was out of control. besides not hearing "staying inside the lines", it was a great set. i was so impressed by the response from the crowd. as we were leaving, i ran into jon and he gave me a hug. let's just say he got sweat all over my face and i was disgusted.
maria and i headed towards the smartpunk stage and caught the end of gatsby's american dream. p.s. the drummer is indian. we found out from their merch guy that his name is rudy, or as i named him, rudy the cutie.
re and i had some time to kill so we got smoothies and spied on the t's. that got boring, so we started walking to go see what was going on at the main stage. all of a sudden, i felt a tap on my shoulder. i turned around and it was justin! steve and southern kid were with him. steve was like, "so i want to hear all about it." i was like, "all about what?" and he said imusicast. so i said it was kind of boring but a good experience. then i looked at justin and said, "i mean you saw what i had to do." he was like, "yeah, he made her tape out all these names in this legal document." i decided to tell justin how bryan then said he couldn't understand the files, so i had to finish taping, copy, take off all the tape, and re-copy before i was finished with that task. he was like, "that's so stupid. bryan's so stupid." basically nobody likes bryan. it's true. then i was like, "so justin, i'm having this problem with the fact that i can't get 'staying inside the lines' out of my head. today i was drying my hair and trying to sing what i could remember when i looked up and maria was laughing at me. basically, i'm going to need you guys to play that soon so i can try and learn more of it." steve was like, "so that was the song you heard them record?!" and i was like, "no no. that was a different song. that is a song that nobody but me," then i turned and said to justin, "or anybody you have played it for has heard!" he was like, "we haven't even heard the product yet!" but then he said "johnny genius" and it made me miss imusicast's people. p.s. i love justin.
the day continued to be amazing because re and i saw this band's merch tent that we had been following around all day. welcome to the obsession with...novella. major hotties, yo. the cd blew, but we bought it anyways since they're from st. louis and are playing that show. ohhh we'll be there, you know how we do. nice guys. anna came over and said something about nate. he had been with some chick all day, and i turned towards his tent to make a crack about him, but guess what. he was already staring in our direction. i was like, "oh shit!" and he smiled and waved. so we went over there and i was like, "i was about to say something about you getting it on with that girl before you saw me..." i thought he said to anna that from first to last was the best band, so i stared with evil eyes at him for like four minutes. he was confused, but then anna cleared up the misunderstanding. since nate is so odd sometimes, i realized it's just fun to be odd back. i was like, "you know nate, i'm gonna eventually have to buy that cat shirt someday!" he didn't know what i was talking about, since it was a joke with myself apparently at the toledo show, but it cracked me up so that's all i care about. hahahahah
we headed down to watch hipv. i went crazy again. joe reo looked over, i was flailing my arms, and i smacked maria. MY BAD. sooo funny. we stayed up there while bleed the dream went on to wait for the t's. the t's did really well. tom's shirt was pretty much amazing. tim's sexual antics and woman-beating guitar gyrations were out of control. bryce was standing on the side. he kept looking at me because i know with our two nasty encounters, he recognized me. fuck off.
we went to say bye to monica. matt gave me a high five. shawn was looking hotttt. he asked me how the internship went, and i asked about their trip. i told him his eyebrow was bleeding. he was like "where? where? oh well." then he put his hand on my head and moved it so he could try and see his reflection in my glasses. he couldn't. i told him i was doing some promotion for them and he grabbed my arm and was like, "thank you sooo much." you're welcome so much. p.s. i love you all!
i said bye to rob and told him about st. louis and kansas. he was like, "really!?" i was like, "you know how i do." he gave me a hug and said "nice to see you." i looked over joe's shoulder to see what he was doing but got bored and decided to head down to see fall out boy. we were too tired, so we left.
we got amazing pizza and rented clue. not too far into the movie did we receive a call from seth. he was like, "hello ohio." it was adorable. august merch sales is definitely on. i'm sooo stoked. then he goes, "when we get home, we're getting your addresses and sending you shirts and stuff for all your help!" and he told us to call whenever we can so we can talk to all the guys who are apparently really excited. not as much as us! eek! we decided swinging was in order, but before we got there, we saw a van and clip on. we pulled into the lot and as the guys walked out, i stuck myself out of the sunroof and said, "i just wanted to say that we hope you enjoyed your first day on tour and have a safe drive to milwaukee." hahahah they said thanks and came over and introduced themselves. they're playing st. louis and kansas, soooooooo everyone should check out the actuals. jeremy and polska for life! we drove to polaris and watched all the buses file out and drive westward onto the next city. to conclude the amazing day, we swung and discussed the amazingess of this summer. amazing.
but wait it gets better! i e-mailed miles to tell him about my promotional work and to ask about getting on the list, here's what i got back:
What a fantastic report, Allison. We so appreciate what you did.
I'm cc-ing this to Matches' new tour manager, Tony, and to Josh, Matches' new
volunteer coordinator. They'll be in touch about any possible comps.
I heard from Tony by phone tonight a similar appraisal of the Columbus' crowd
response. It seems the Matches had a big turn out of fans familiar with their
music.
The myspace contact you did was a brilliant idea -- and a lot of work. Way to
go.
Along with pursuing myspace promotion for upcoming shows and similar stuff, it
might be interesting to see what you'd get back if you emailed to find out if
any of the Columbus myuspace fans unfamiliar with the Matches saw their set on
your recommendation (and what they thought).
Thanks.
Best,
-Miles
okay now that doesn't answer my question about getting on the list. i decided i'd have to call this tony guy who is their new tour manager (p.s. he's also asian)...but oh wait, i didn't have to:
Hey Allison -
I'm putting you plus one for the St Louis show...if any problems, call me. Also, email me about Kansas if you plan on going.
best,
Tony
KANSAS HERE WE COME!!
