"I don't feel like going to work today."

Remy didn't even bother looking up from his book as he replied, "That's the same thing you said yesterday, Sydney, and chances are you'll say it again tomorrow."

She flung her hand out, exasperated. "Exaclty, that's my point. Why do I subject myself to a mediocre job when I know that I'm capable of so much more. I'm wasting away here. Do you know how much time I waste everyday at that place, waiting tables and taking care of people I dont' even know for a few bucks? I mean is it all even worth it in the end?"

"I don't know, get back to me later this month when the rent is due," Remy did look up this time and smiled.

"Why do we break ourselves, shatter who we are simply to make money, to get something that's gone almost as quickly as we gain it?"

Remy shrugged and screwed his face in an expression of searching confusion. "Becasue we live in America?"

Sydney jabbed a finger at him like a satisfied teacher and said, "Exactly! Do you think people in China feel the same way we do?"

"Well, considering that China is almost like a brother nation to America, I'd say yes."

Sydney deflated for a moment, the wind stolen from her sails. "True. But what about people in..." she waggled her fingers, coaxing the words out, "...Africa?"

"Too busy killing each other with guns given to them by the US, at least when they're not dealing with the whole AIDS outbreak over there," Remy replied quickly on the heels of her question, his eyes going back to his book.

"So the entire world if messed up because of one nation?"

"More of a crippling mutating disease than a nation, but yeah," Remy said with frank matter-of-factness.

Sydney was silent for a moment as she looked at her roommate, studied his calm demenor as they discussed the fact that their home country was the heart of a global monster. "How can you be so calm about this, Remy?"

He lowered his book into his lap and looked at her. "I've forced myself to get used to the fact. I'd go crazy, kill myself after I killed everyone else if I allowed the reality of the world to strip my soul clean."

"So you just let the disease infect you?"

"Diseases only infect the living, Sydney, as far as I'm concerned I died inside a long time ago."

Peace. Out.
