One of the casualties of a too-busy life has been my love of movies. I don't remember the last time being able to curl up and watch a movie only I like and understand... and break it down in my head and cull from it some gems of inspiration.
This morning, RISKY BUSINESS is on tv. People know it was the movie where Tom Cruise dances in his underwear in the living room, but I'm realizing what an awesome movie this is. And not just because it also stars Booger, Balki not doing an accent (fackyoo Cousin Larry), and Rebecca De Mornay when she was hot and young.
A lot of 80s movies were aspirational. Movies about rebelling against your life, your parents, your school, your social status... whatever... and getting away with it. Like a lot of my favourite movies, this one immediately made me feel good about life ahead.
It was a scene between Joel (Cruise) and the guy who plays Booger in Revenge of the Nerds (another 80s classic!).
Joel Goodson: When it came right down to it, I just wasn't attracted to her.
Miles: That should never stop you.
Miles: Joel, you wanna know something? Every now and then say, "What the fuck." "What the fuck" gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity makes your future. So your parents are going out of town. You got the place all to yourself.
Joel Goodson: Yeah.
Miles: What the fuck.
What the fuck. So simple that it's genuis. What the fuck. Movies just don't make sense like that anymore.
If I think about my life and how it's been... everything good that has happened, happened because in some way or another, I said "What the fuck". Applying to Ryerson... moving out... interning... going BACK to school... striking out with the Sweatshop... quitting for Magno... asking my wife-to-be out... the poetry thing.. this whole MTV thing... these are all What The Fuck moves.
Without What the Fuck, life is boring and unchanged. It goes for everything. This year, for me and my friends asking me for advice...
What will I say?
"What the Fuck". Sometimes, you just gotta say it.
